Good Morning!
Sometimes our library, the East Baton Rouge Parish Library is the coolest thing. I was excited when they upgrade to OverDrive. Audio books are a HUGE part of my life and now our library is finally getting some great audios in. Take a look.
The Monkey's Raincoat by Robert CraisWhen Ellen Lang's husband disappears with their son, she hires Elvis Cole to track him down. A quiet and seemingly submissive wife, Ellen can't even write a check without him. All she wants is to get him and her son back - no questions asked.
The search for Ellen's errant husband leads Elvis into the seamier side of Hollywood. He soon learns that Mort Lang is a down-on-his-luck talent agent who associates with a schlocky movie producer, and the last place he was spotted was at a party thrown by a famous and very well-connected ex-Matador. But no one has seen him since - including his B-movie girlfriend.
At the same time the police find Mort in his parked car with four gunshots in his chest - and no kid in sight - Ellen disappears. Now nothing is what it seems, and the heat is on. It's up to Elvis Cole and his partner Joe Pike to find the connection between sleazy Hollywood players and an ex-Matador.
The Appeal by John GrishamIn a crowded courtroom in Mississippi, a jury returns a shocking verdict against a chemical company accused of dumping toxic waste into a small town’s water supply, causing the worst “cancer cluster” in history. The company appeals to the Mississippi Supreme Court, whose nine justices will one day either approve the verdict or reverse it.
Who are the nine? How will they vote? Can one be replaced before the case is ultimately decided?
The chemical company is owned by a Wall Street predator named Carl Trudeau, and Mr. Trudeau is convinced the Court is not friendly enough. With judicial elections looming, he decides to try to purchase himself a seat on the Court. The cost is a few million dollars, a drop in the bucket for a billionaire like Mr. Trudeau. Through an intricate web of conspiracy and deceit, his political operatives recruit a young, unsuspecting candidate. They finance him, manipulate him, market him, and mold him into a potential Supreme Court justice. Their Supreme Court justice.
The Appeal is a powerful, timely, and shocking story of political and legal intrigue, a story that will leave listeners unable to think about our electoral process or judicial system in quite the same way ever again.
Honeymoon by James Patterson & Howard RoughanHow does it feel to be desired by every man and envied by every woman? Wonderful. This is the life Nora Sinclair has dreamed about, the life she's worked hard for, the life she will never give up. Meet Nora Sinclair.
When FBI agent John O'Hara first sees her, she seems perfect. She has the looks. The career. The clothes. The wit. The sophistication. The tantalizing sex appeal. The whole extraordinary package - and men fall in line to court her. She doesn't just attract men, she enthralls them. If you dare.
So why is the FBI so interested in Nora Sinclair? Mysterious things keep happening to people around her, especially the men. And there is something dangerous about Nora when Agent O'Hara looks closer - something that lures him at the same time that it fills him with fear. Is there something dark hidden among the unexplained gaps in her past? And as he spends more and more time getting to know her, is he pursuing justice? Or his own fatal obsession?
All He Ever Wanted by Anita ShreveEtna Bliss has just moved to the New England town where her uncle teaches college when her life is transformed in a single stroke. She is dining in a hotel downtown when a fire forces her to escape to the snowy streets outside. Amid the smoke and chaos of that night she is glimpsed, standing under a streetlight, by a man who was dining in the same room-a man who is so overwhelmed by the sight of her that he rebuilds his life around a single goal: to marry Etna Bliss.
That man is Nicholas Van Tassel, and All He Ever Wanted is his account of how two lives changed from that tumultuous night forward. A proud and orderly man, Van Tassel is ill equipped to deal with the ferocity of love. But he is determined to have Etna no matter what the cost. Riding a train south many years later, he unwinds his memories of the years that followed and struggles to understand the mystery his life became on that night.
This is no ordinary tale of obsession. It is a story about different kinds of love, different ideas of what love is, and how lives can be strained to breaking over those differences. It is a powerful exploration of the music and silences of family life, the unhinging forces of desire, the wrenching power of secrets unrevealed, and the bewildering territories of betrayal and loss. Written with the maturity, beauty, intelligence, and grace that are Anita Shreve's hallmarks, this is a story that powerfully conjures another time and place-peopled by unforgettable characters as real as the emotions that bring them together.
Trapped by Chris Jordan"Mom, I need your help. Please call—" That's it. The call cuts off in midsentence.
No static. Nothing.
Just an overwhelming silence.
Long Island single mom Jane Hartley is frantic when her sixteen-year-old daughter, Kelly, a survivor of childhood leukemia, disappears from her bedroom one night. To Jane's frustration, the police believe that Kelly ran off willingly with her boyfriend, Seth. Unaware that her daughter even had a boyfriend, Jane soon discovers that Seth is no boy. He is an adult—a man who, after meeting Kelly on the Internet, took the teenager on one thrill-seeking ride after another. From motorcycles to skydiving, Jane's little girl has been hiding some dangerous secrets.
Like mother, like daughter.
Adamant that Kelly is not a runaway but, rather, is being held against her will, Jane hires ex-FBI agent Randall Shane to follow the trail of her missing child. But every step brings them closer to a cold-blooded predator lurking in the shadows… coiled around Jane's shameful secret…waiting to strike.
The Host by Stephenie MeyerMelanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.
Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.
Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves-Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.
Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, THE HOST is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.
Garden Spells by Sarah Addison AllenIn a garden surrounded by a tall fence, tucked away behind a small, quiet house in an even smaller town, is an apple tree that is rumored to bear a very special sort of fruit. In this luminous debut novel, Sarah Addison Allen tells the story of that enchanted tree, and the extraordinary people who tend it.…
The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers. Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures.
A successful caterer, Claire Waverley prepares dishes made with her mystical plants—from the nasturtiums that aid in keeping secrets and the pansies that make children thoughtful, to the snapdragons intended to discourage the attentions of her amorous neighbor. Meanwhile, her elderly cousin, Evanelle, is known for distributing unexpected gifts whose uses become uncannily clear. They are the last of the Waverleys—except for Claire’s rebellious sister, Sydney, who fled Bascom the moment she could, abandoning Claire, as their own mother had years before.
When Sydney suddenly returns home with a young daughter of her own, Claire’s quiet life is turned upside down—along with the protective boundary she has so carefully constructed around her heart. Together again in the house they grew up in, Sydney takes stock of all she left behind, as Claire struggles to heal the wounds of the past. And soon the sisters realize they mustdeal with their common legacy—if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom—or with each other.
Enchanting and heartfelt, this captivating novel is sure to cast a spell with a style all its own….
Chasing Darkness by Robert CraisIt's fire season, and the hills of Los Angeles are burning. When police and fire department personnel rush door to door in a frenzied evacuation effort, they discover the week-old corpse of an apparent suicide. But the gunshot victim is less gruesome than what they find in his lap: a photo album of seven brutally murdered young women -- one per year, for seven years. And when the suicide victim is identified as a former suspect in one of the murders, the news turns Elvis Cole's world upside down.
Three years earlier Lionel Byrd was brought to trial for the murder of a female prostitute named Yvonne Bennett. A taped confession coerced by the police inspired a prominent defense attorney to take Byrd's case, and Elvis Cole was hired to investigate. It was Cole's eleventh-hour discovery of an exculpatory videotape that allowed Lionel Byrd to walk free. Elvis was hailed as a hero.
But the discovery of the death album in Byrd's lap now brands Elvis as an unwitting accomplice to murder. Captured in photographs that could only have been taken by the murderer, Yvonne Bennett was the fifth of the seven victims -- two more young women were murdered after Lionel Byrd walked free. So Elvis can't help but wonder -- did he, Elvis Cole, cost two more young women their lives?
Shut out of the investigation by a special LAPD task force determined to close the case, Elvis Cole and Joe Pike desperately fight to uncover the truth about Lionel Byrd and his nightmare album of death -- a truth hidden by lies, politics, and corruption in a world where nothing is what it seems to be.
Chasing Darkness isa blistering thriller from the bestselling author who sets the standard for intense, powerful crime writing.

Fatal by Michael PalmerIn Chicago, a pregnant cafeteria worker suffering nothing more malevolent than flulike symptoms begins hemorrhaging from every part of her body. Five years ago, internist and emergency specialist Matt Rutledge returned to his West Virginia home to marry his high-school sweetheart and open a practice. He also had a score to settle. His father died while working for the Belinda Coal and Coke Company, and Matt swore to expose the mine’s health and safety violations.
When his beloved Ginny succumbed to an unusual cancer, his campaign became even more bitterly personal. Now Matt has identified two bizarre cases of what he has dubbed the Belinda Syndrome--caused, he is certain, by the mine’s careless disposal of toxic chemicals. All he needs is proof.

Massachusetts coroner Nikki Solari comes to attend the funeral of her roommate, killed violently on a Boston street. Since Gustav hit, I haven't been back to the gym. If everything goes as planned, I'll be there on Monday. That's when I listen to my audio books. I am currently listening to All He Ever Wanted by Anita Shreve. I am almost done. I have no idea which will be next. Maybe you can help me decide. Which would you pick and why? Or maybe none of these sound appealing. If so, which audio are you looking forward to.

Yay! I love it when my library expands their selections.
There are some good ones here.
When do you listen to the audiobooks?
Right now, I only listen when I run. But I think as my kids get older and I spend more time taxi-ing them to activities, I'll listen in the car, too.
Great selections as usual. I have a couple of those in my TBR stack. :)
I'd love to love audio books but it's never happened for me. I suppose someday I could try one on the bus instead of reading but I think I can read faster than I can listen.
I haven't been to the library in awhile I'm trying to read my own books. But I do love that place and hope to get back to it someday :D Our library is so great, it's part of a whole "Central Park" including a nice indoor nature area with a waterfall, a indoor park for kids and a little cafe!
Ahh, The Host! I expected to absolutely love it, but for whatever reason I haven't been able to get into it (like many books lately). I did loooove Garden Spells, though. It was perfect plane reading.
Happy Sunday!
You have been busy!!
I did a lot with my students with primary documents from the Library of Congress. They have a spectacular collection of materials to use in the classroom.
Thanks for all the book looks. The Anita Shreve book is one I know I will read now that I read your review. I have Host and Garden Spell and have just not had the time to get to them yet.
Have a great week Kaye.

I love that my library offers this service. I check out audio books all the time through Overdrive. When I run out of selections on my card, I use my sons' cards, lol.
Shana ~ Also when I am being Taxi mom and for the weekend events where I stay with the kids, such as for chess and Yu-Gi-Oh.
Alea ~ Ah, see that's where we are very different. I am a slow reader. Audios are faster for me.
Andi & Naida ~ I tried to read it, but the book was way too boring. Sometimes if I get these in audios, I can stay with it longer.
wisteria ~ That sounds so neat. Love the library!
Breeni Books ~ OMG! I do the same. Billy's has expired and he refuses to get his renewed. I only have Jimmy's now...lol!
Oh, wow! What a great selection to choose from. You know, I don't frequent my library that much anymore, but I really should stop in to check out their audio book section. I'm starting to listen to more of them now, and having easier access to a wider variety would be great.
I'd recommend Garden Spells. I have that in my own TBR pile. Yesterday I picked it up and read the first few pages -- absolutely enchanting. I was sad to put it down, but I already have four books going right now!
Ruth ~ I understand juggling so many that one has to be put down. So far, it hasn't ever been a really, really good book...lol!
Fatal sounds like a good one. You should try that one. I have read Taken and Trapped by Chris Jordan. I liked Trapped just a little better then Taken but still a good book
Cheryl ~ Are "Taken" and "Trapped" a series?
Ruth ~ I don't get any warm and fuzzies with GARDEN SPELLS though all my reading friends are raving...lol!
That is a great selection! My little library is really starting to get some great titles on audiobooks too and one in particular I have been wanting is The Art of Racing in the Rain. But I have searched through my house and found about 3 portable CD players and not a single one works. I don't know what my son did to them!
I'd picked Trapped or Garden Spells! Trapped because it sounds like it's full of thrills (so it wouldn't lull me to sleep like most audio books do) and Garden Spells because I really want to read it!
The only time I've listened to an audio book was with my mom on our way to Foxwoods. It's about a 5-hour drive from our home and listening to a story really helped to make the trip go by quickly.
All those books look good. I've read a few of them but your review has piqued my interst in the others.
Icedream ~ Ah, see I don't allow anyone to touch my stuff. :) I'll get them their own, but mine is mine and I don't share - ever...lol!
Lenore & Linda Jacobs ~ I was leaning towards TRAPPED. It does sound good.
I definitely want to read the Anita Shreve book and TRAPPED. They sound really good! Those are some great selections.
I loved Honeymoon by James Patterson. It was very chilling and I really enjoyed it. I would bump that up!
What do you use to listen to them? When I turn off my MP3 player, it starts them over so it is frustrating.
Lisa ~ I am really enjoying Shreve's book.
Kristie ~ I never turn my MP3 off. I pause it and it will automatically shut off and at the same time save my place.
Taken and Trapped are not a series but two seperate books. I think the author was just going for the theme of one line book titles.
Cheryl ~ Thank you! If it was a series, I'd have to scramble to find the first one. Now I can kick back and relax.
Wow! You have some great choices. I love going to the library and getting a bunch of really good books that I'm excited about. I'm interested to see in what you listen to next :)
I've tried listening to audio books several times and as it's playing along, I'll suddenly realize that I have no idea what's going on because I haven't been paying attention. I must be a visual learner.
I was so excited when my library got Overdrive Audio too. I usually listen when I'm working out (which hasn't been enough lately) and I also find housework goes better if I'm listening!
From your choices I think I'd go with Garden Spells - all the blog buzz on this one has me intrigued. Or maybe Trapped - sounds like a fantastic thriller.
Enjoy your Sunday!
Lot's of interesting titles here! The Host and Garden Spells sound like good reads.
I loved Honeymoon and The Host! Enjoy!
samantha.1020 ~ I know what you mean. I feel really blessed to have such a wonderful library.
bermudaonion ~ LOL! I'm a serious listener. Loved when I was told stories when I was little. My grandfather was an awesome story teller.
Book Zombie ~ I never thought I could do it, but found it's also my favorite time to listen to audio. Makes the workout go by so quickly.
Ladytink_534 ~ I thought for sure you'd read THE HOST already.
Yvonne ~ I couldn't read THE HOST. I am giving it another shot with audio. I am not holding my breath though.
What a awesome list- I have 5 of those already that's on my TBR pile. I'm almost scared to read your review on them because then i'll have to shift around my pile lol!
I almost bought Garden Spells to listen to on one of my jaunts to Oklahoma, but decided it would be silly to listen to an audio of a book I'd already read. Big mistake. I bought an unabridged classic and it practically put me to sleep!
I love The Monkey's Raincoat. I've got a copy of it on my good shelves. I no longer read mysteries (at least, not often) but I enjoyed that one so much I can't bear to part with it.
wow! J.Kaye! TRAPPED IS MY PICK. I've read most of the James Patterson ones. Holy Cow, what did you hold a come one come all since I've been in the hospital? Great job with the traffic. : ( I need to boost mine up. If you have any pointers, I'm listening. Especially when I am trying to keep it up sick. I miss you all so much. How's Naida and Icedream...windy city and Betty?
I love ya
xo
Amy
Those are some fantastic audio books, you really enjoy The Honeymoon on audiobook.
I also enjoyed reading All he ever wanted by shreve.
I liked Judge & Jury on audio... in fact, it's the best Patterson I've read in quite a while. But be forewarned...some of the music and sound effects are uber-cheesy.
Serena ~ I was listening to BEACH HOUSE. It was great and then my MP3 stopped playing - ugh! Lost all my data in order to clear it out. :(
jaime ~ I could do with NO music until the very end...and they could skip it then too. :)
