1st in Series Challenge 2009

Thoughts of Joy hosted this cool challenge this year. By the time I'd heard about it, it was too late in the game to join. I had planned to sign up in 2009, but found out that Joy will no longer be hosting challenges after this year. Although I understand why, she will be sorely missed. As you know, she has been the Queen of Book Challenges. :) So as not to let this challenge die, I'd like to host this challenge in 2009. I'll be listing a couple other challenges that she hosted in a bit. First this one.

Guidelines for 1st in Series Challenge 2009

1. Anyone can join. You don't need a blog to participate.

2. Read 12 books that are the first in any series. You may read & list your chosen books any time during the year.

3. Challenge begins January thru December, 2009.

4. You can join anytime between now and December 31, 2009.

When you sign up under Mr. Linky, put the direct link to your post where your 1st in Series books will be listed. If you list just your blog’s URL, it will be removed.

BLOGGERS: Post/Link your reviews here. This is optional, of course.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask below or email me at jkayeoldner@yahoo.com. Comments usually get a quicker response.

Yay! I'm glad that you are hosting these and will be back to sign up. I love making the lists for these challenges even if I never stick to them.

Susan L. said...

Count me in for this challenge. I love series books. I'm leaving my link.

Lezlie said...

Thanks for picking this one up, J. Kaye! I'll probably be back later to sign up, but I'll post it on my list of Offical 2009 Challenges for others to check out now.

Lezlie

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Lezlie ~ You have a separate blog for challenges?

Lezlie said...

Not a separate blog. I have a link in my sidebar to a post that lists Official Challenge sites and links to them so people who are interested can sign up.

Lezlie

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Oh gotcha, Lezlie! I know of some who keep a separate blog. I've tried and can't. I can barely keep up with this one.

Lezlie said...

I agree. I can hardly remember all the review links I need to make the way it is! :-)

samantha.1020 ~ I really do plan on doing better in 2009. :)

Susan L. ~ LOVE your PBS widget!! I didn't know they had those.

Kara said...

I'm up for the challenge again next year. Thanks J. Kaye for hosting this. I already signed up on Mr. Linky with a link to my post (yes, I'm one of those odd people that keeps a separate blog for my challenges - and it is hard to keep up with both!! LOL).

Ms. Bookish said...

J. Kaye, thanks for hosting this one. I really enjoy series books, and it's always wonderful finding a new series. This will encourage me to keep my eyes out even more.

Jackie M (Literary Escapism) said...

Oh yeah! I'm in. I was able to do it this year and had a blast with it. It also works really well with my New Authors Challenge since if it's the first book in a series, it's generally the first time I've read the author.

And I'm doing the 2nds Challenge too!

Jessalina said...

I joined this one.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Kara ~ You are my hero! I wish I could do that. I am having to move all the challenges to this blog because I can't keep track of more than this one.

Ms. Bookish ~ I am looking forward to this one too!

Jackie M (Literary Escapism) ~ You are so right! It does work well with that challenge too.

Jessalina ~ Welcome!

drey said...

I'm in! Now, at the end of next year, I'll have to do a compilation of all the books I'd have read for this and the 100+ challenge!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Drey ~ It wasn't until I started blogging that I realized I didn't record every book I read. Doing these challenges really helps.

Kristen howe said...

Way cool. I'll be doing new cozies and new series next year as I did last year.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Kristen howe ~ I agree. This is a cool challenge. Thoughts of Joy gets the credit. She is the Queen of Book Challenges.

Grilsgood said...

This one sounds like fun, I do enjoy series. Lindy

Oops, I meant to mention that I'm moving my blog over to wordpress. I made my post for this challenge over there.

This challenge is right up my alley! I read a lot of series. Looking forward to it!

Can't wait to get started!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Grilsgood ~ I haven't been able to enjoy many this year. I am hoping I will in 2009.

Tara ~ Me too. There are so many books I've wanted to read and didn't have the time.

tarablythe ~ NO YOU DIDN'T! Why? (Just curious?)

Tina Elder Riddle ~ So nice to meet you! I agree. I love this challenge.

debbiesworld ~ What's going to be your first book? Do you know yet?

miish said...

2009 is looking to be a fun year already (=

J. Kaye Oldner said...

miish ~ Yes it is!

talesofabookaddict said...

Why am I moving my blog to wordpress? I don't know, I just got so fed up with blogspot that I was in for a change, both sites have pros and cons, but I feel more comfortable over there. I was able to keep my "Tales of a Book Addict" name, so I'm now going to be http://talesofabookaddict.wordpress.com instead of blogspot.

Tara

J. Kaye Oldner said...

talesofabookaddict ~ The only reason I didn't stick with them is I couldn't subscribe to a post. Meaning, I'd never know if the person commented. It's the big thing that separates out Blogger from Wordpress.

Kris said...

I'm looking forward to trying this one again..I hope I do better.

Thanks for picking up this challenge J. Kaye!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Hey Kris! Oh yes, Joy came up with such good ones. Hard to let them go. I didn't do so well with my 2008 challenges, but I had other things going on. I plan to focus just on this for 2009. :)

Intergalactic Bookworm said...

I am glad you are hosting this challenge again. I know that I did not do well on this challenge this year. Judy/intergalactic bookworm

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Intergalactic Bookworm ~ I'm not hosting it again. Joy at Thoughts of Joy did. I'll be taking over this year for her. Also, make sure it's to your blog page where you'll be listing your books. If you wish to post books on your sidebar instead, then list the challenge gif with a link. That way, the word will get around about the challenge.

Mervi said...

Great challenge! I'm in.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Mervi ~ Glad to have you! :)

wendy said...

Please add me to this challenge also. Maybe this will lead me to some undiscovered gems and new writers.

wendy

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Wendy ~ Welcome to the challenge!

LisaMay & sunlightbub ~ So glad you two are joining in the fun!

Sarai said...

Okay so I'm game I think this will be fun and can't wait to start what a wonderful idea. Maybe it will kick me into reading that massive TBR pile!

Sarai said...

Okay the correct post/link is up sorry about the misunderstanding!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Sarai ~ I think that is why I signed up for so many challenges. I really want to get all my books read in 2009. I'd like to see naked shelves by the end of next year.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Sarai ~ About the link, it's removed. No biggie. :)

Mary Beth said...

I just signed up for the 2nds challenge - I couldn't leave firsts all alone by themselves:)

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Mary Beth ~ Welcome! I agree. Both go so well together.

retroredux ~ Welcome to the 1st in Series Reading Challenge!

Becky ~ Are you planning to have the young readers challenge again?

debbiesworld said...

I've been wanting to start so many new series I had to sign up for this. http://debbiesworld.wordpress.com/2009/01/01/1st-in-series-challenge-2009/

J. Kaye Oldner said...

debbiesworld ~ I totally understand the feeling! :)

Sayuri said...

I'm in!

Shelley Munro said...

Thanks! This looks like a fun challenge.

Rasberryswrlgirl said...

Can the books cross challenge? I mean can my first book in the thriller and suspense challenge also be the first book in my 1st in a series challenge?

Literary Feline said...

I have a question. One of the books I am hoping to read this year is actually two in one--an omnibus (is that the right word?) of two or her books that had initially been published separately. It's the first and second book in a series. Would that count for the 1st in a Series Challenge and the 2nds or no because my version is one book in its current state? I could always go out and buy the individual books if I really needed to--but I probably would just not count them for these two challenges if the answer is no. I'm okay with whatever you decide, J. Kaye. I hope my question makes sense.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Literary Feline ~ I understand exactly what you are referring to. Personally, my feeling is that if it is originally published separate, then it should still count as two books. Some trilogies are like this. They were originally published as three separate books and later you can buy a 3-in-1.

Sayuri & Shelley Munro ~ Welcome!

Rasberryswrlgirl ~ Yes! I wouldn't sign up for a challenge that wouldn't allow crossovers. ;) Love seeing how many challenges I can list under one book.

Literary Feline said...

Thanks for answering my question, J. Kaye!

Lori said...

I'm going to try this one too. I have several series that I've had to give up on so it's a good time to shop for new ones.

wonderings said...

Do count me in - thanks for hosting!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Lori & wonderings ~ Welcome!

Angela said...

Okay, I'm committing to this one too. I'd love some suggestions for new series to read :-)

Library Girl Reads

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Angela ~ It would really depend on your taste in books. Since I have joined the blogosphere and visit other book blogs, I have never needed another reading recommendation. In fact, I have a wish list that is seriously growing out of control. A good start would be to click on links of the participants above. Many have authors/titles listed.

Speed Reader said...

I am *begrudgingly* accepting this challenge! I always seem to find the first book in a series that hasn't finished being published yet. So while I totally adore the story so far, I get annoyed that I have keep waiting for more pieces of the story to be completed! ;) Good luck to all!

Becflies said...

I think I am aleady off to a good start, I had already started a few books that were the beginnings of series...

Erika Lynn said...

This looks like so much fun. And I had already read two in the last few weeks. I love a good book and I love a challenge so this is basically the best ever!

Kitten said...

I figured that I'm reading Twilight, I may as well sign up for this challenge, since Twilight's the first of a four-book saga!

Jennifer Y. said...

I just signed up!

J. Kaye said...

Speed Reader, Becflies, Erika Lynn, Kitten, & Jennifer Y. ~ Welcome to this challenge. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Teddyree said...

Another one for me J.Kaye, didn't realise that so many of my books fit into this challenge too.

SueFitz said...

yeah another one to join....

Ruthie said...

I'm really loving all these challenges. They're great for justifying my book-buying habit. :)

J. Kaye said...

Teddyree ~ Me either and it's like a treasure hunt...lol!

SueFitz ~ Yippee!

Ruthie ~ Shhhhh! My husband hasn't figured that out yet.. :)

Review for Eyes like stars, the first one in a series ^^

Alaine said...

Just a quick question. Is Ken Follets Pillars of the Earth considered a 1st in a Series and would Elizabeth Chadwick's The Greatest Knight be considered. Both of these books have follow ups and are either called sequels as in World Without End and The Scarlet Lion which is about the same character as The Greatest Knight. Anyway, just wondering, don't mind either way.

J. Kaye said...

Alaine - I'd say definitely. Lisa Unger had a book like that. It wasn't a long series, but it was two books. The first and follow up. I'd have put her first book down.

MarthaE said...

Hi! JKaye - I have two Qs...1) How do I find/get to Mr. Linky to check if I have signed up for 1st in Series and get my number? 2) is there a button on your site to "follow" on Blogger in addition to subscribe? Thanks for helping me out here!!

J. Kaye said...

MarthaE ~ Mr. Linky has been having technical issues. Hopefully it will be fixed soon. I added the follow option in the right sidebar. :)

MarthaE said...

Thank you! Got signed up for both!

Thanks for hosting this! It's just what I needed to push me into starting new series (even though I'm hopelessly behand at current ones). It will be fun. :-)

This seems fun, and a great way to see what everyone else is doing. can't wait for more activities

Karen in TN said...

I forgot to link in when I started the challenge (1/8/09). Since then Suvudu decided to give away a lot of first in series books, making it a hard choice of which to read, rather than which to buy.

Jenny said...

I finished! Thought it would take longer. Very fun challenge. Now to finish the series that I haven't already.
