The 2009 - 100+ Reading Challenge

The 100+ Reading Challenge will be hosted here this year. Here are the guidelines:

1) You can join anytime as long as you don’t start reading your books prior to 2009.

2) This challenge is for 2009 only. The last day to have all your books read is December 31, 2009.

3) You can join anytime between now and December 31, 2009.

5) When you sign up under Mr. Linky, list the direct link to your post where your 100+ books will be listed. If you list just your blog’s URL, it will be removed.

5) All books count: children’s, YA, adults, fiction, non-fiction, how-tos, etc.

6) If you have any questions, feel free to ask below or email me at jkayesbookblog@yahoo.com. Comments usually get a quicker response.

***Update: You do not have to decided on your books ahead of time. You can add or subtract from your list during the year.

Not going to make it this year - going to get close though.

Hoping to complete this in 2009.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

I set mine at 200 in 2008. No, I won't be making it, but I'll be close. It will be the most I have ever read in a year. I won't be shooting for anything so high in 2009 though. If I can get 100, I'll be happy...lol!

Dar said...

I'll be joining J. Kaye. I'll do my post tomorrow and come back and link it then.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Participants: Again, read #5!

5) When you sign up under Mr. Linky, put the direct link to your post. It's the post where your 100+ books will be listed. If you list just your blog’s URL, it will be removed.

Take a look at Kara's. And follow her example.

I'll be doing my post tomorrow.

Hi J. Kaye, I just found your blog and I'm loving the 100+ Reading Challenge so much I wished it was already 31st Dec 2008 today! LOL! Thanks for hosting this challenge, I've signed up already and linked to my post. =)

jmnlman said...

Do we have to declare the list of 100 books before hand? Or is it acceptable to have a placeholder post that gets updated as we go?

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Betty ~ Welcome! I really enjoy this challenge as it's a great way to keep track of the number of books I've read.

jmnlman ~ No, you don't have to decide ahead of time. If so, I wouldn't be able to join my own challenge. :) You can also remove a book if needed as well.

bigSIS said...

I hope I linked that right! This is my first official challenge and I'm excited to see how much I DO actually read throughout a year. =)

J. Kaye Oldner said...

bigSIS ~ Welcome to the challenge! You are all set for 2009.

I'm in again for this year. Yippee!!

So far I've read 112 books this year! I'd love to sign on for next year too.

Betty said...

Thanks for the welcome, J. Kaye, I'm really glad to be here! Anyway, I think there's a double link to my post on Mister Linky, I'm Betty, and there's a Betty's Books link which also links to the same post.

Ms Ulat Buku said...

Looking forward to the challenge J. Kaye. I'm linking my post now... Happy 2009 Reading y'all.

Ms Ulat Buku said...

Ok... am having problems linking...be patient with me. :)

I found your blog today! So excited for this reading challenge! Thanks!

I'm on 99 right now for 2008, and I'm hoping 2009 will be as good a year.

Jan Oelkers said...

Another Oelkers join's the fray. I can't wait to see everyone's list. More ideas of what to read. Good luck to all.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Lezlie ~ I really like this challenge. It was the first one I ever hosted. :)

Ladytink_534 ~ Then 100 will be easy breezy next year! :)

Betty ~ My fault. I didn't see your name and added you. It's all fixed now. Sorry.

Ms Ulat Buku ~ You are all set!

Stephanie Oelkers ~ So glad you are joining us. Have fun!

carolsnotebook ~ Me too!!

Jan Oelkers ~ Welcome. :) I left a message for you on your blog on how to list your URL on Mr. Linky.

Michele at Reader's Respite said...

I have no idea what to set my reading goal to. Guess I'll start with 100 and see how it goes.

Michele at Reader's Respite said...

Dang, I'm messing it up already. So you'll see another Mr. Linky for me as I get it right this time.

drey said...

I can't wait to give this a whirl - it will be interesting to see how many I've read, and what they are, at the end of '09. THANK YOU for hosting! =)

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Dar! Somehow I missed you? Maybe we were posting at the same time. UGH! It's been one of those months...started three or so weeks ago...lol!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Hey Drey! Nice to meet you. :)

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Michele at Reader's Respite ~ I came in to assist, but you have it straight! Welcome aboard!

Jessalina said...

I joined it today! I found the blog through goodreads.

Tina Elder Riddle said...

Joining the challenge. I've never paid much attention to how many books I read...I just know that I read constantly and there are books all over my house. I never go anywhere without one!

Veens said...

I don't think I can do this one - last time I did- I was putting too high a standard for me :D

I think I will do maybe 25 books - and then increase it by 10 :)

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Jessalina ~ I am so glad you did!

Tina Elder Riddle ~ It's nice to meet you. :)

Veens ~ I joined a 50 book challenge two or three years ago. It was the first time I kept track of the books I read. I passed 50 the first year and 75 the next. 100 seemed the next logical step. I have been working for about five (ish) years trying improve my yearly count. I am trying to make 200 this year....don't know if I'll make it though.

Mary Beth said...

Oh! I like this challenge - now I have an excuse to ask for lots of books for Christmas this year!!

Kay said...

Now this is a challenge that will be fun to do. Great idea. Cannot wait to get started

Jeska said...

I'm just going to top 100 for this year, so it will be good to make sure I keep up the trend!!

Kerry said...

I found your challenge through Kara's blog.

I set myself a goal of 100 books each year, although in my heart of hearts I always hope for 120 to make an average of 10 a month.

So this is the perfect challenge for me. I've signed up and set up my list page and also joined the Yahoo Group.

I suspect I'll join your library challenge too, but committing to one challenge a day is enough for me at the moment. :)

Kathy said...

I signed up for this challange. Hopefully I did it the correct way. Let me know if I need to change anything. =)

Pabast said...

I will do this challenge again. One of the few that I actually do. I am not sure if I will reach 100 this year. I got off track during the summer. But I will try it again for 2009.

~Kylee in CT said...

I'll be keeping track of how many I read this year. I hope to join if you do it again next year.

~Kylee in CT said...

by "next year" I meant 2010. =/

Grilsgood said...

For 1007 I hread 184, so my goal for 2008 wsa 200, i am at 269 and will make 300 for this year, 100 is a 1/2 year or less. How can anyone who reads from the library, know what 100 books they will read?

blacklin said...

Thank you for hosting this challenge. It will be interesting to see many books I actually read in a year.

I just found this. I am excited about the challenge. I dont currently have a blog, thats another goal for 2009 but I did join the yahoo group.

Looking forward to it.

shelburns said...

This will be my first reading challenge, so I hope it goes well. 100 seems like alot, but with all the books I keep winning and get sent to review, it seems doable (is that a word?). Good luck to everyone!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Mary Beth ~ LOL! I used that one for the previous year. I don't think I can get away with it again.

Kay ~ So glad you like it! :)

Jeska ~ You might even do more. Each year, my numbers grew.

Kerry ~ I am so glad. I am a fan of Kara's blog too.

Kathy ~ You did! I'll be over in a minute to welcome you officially.

Pabast ~ Look forward to having you with us another year!

~Kylee in CT ~ I began blogging as a way to keep track. That was back when I was reading one book a week. I've grown. :)

Grilsgood ~ Way to go!

blacklin ~ I think you will surprise yourself. I had no idea I read so much until I started writing them down.

Nely ~ You are very welcome!

Kelly ~ You don't need one. I don't have a VOX account or I'd post a comment on your blog.

Alabama Book Worm ~ LOL! Last year, I didn't do this and I couldn't go and encourage others. This time, I added a new rule.

Beth F ~ YEAH! So glad you are joining in!!

MsValerie ~ Your first? Way to go! The Yahoo Groups can work too. You can even open a file and keep a list there.

The Holistic Knitter ~ Glad to have you!

donnas ~ Be sure to let us know when you start your own blog. I warn you though, it can be addictive.

shelburns ~ It does. When I started writing down all the books - audio, nonfiction, and fiction - I was surprised to see the numbers grow quickly. This is the first year I have written it all down, even the children's books.

Roni said...

Desperately looking forward to this challenge. I started keeping tracks of what I read in 2004 and have tried to increase the number of books every year since then - but, I've only managed to get 50 in a year. We'll see if this is easier or harder with a new baby!

Maggie said...

I'm so sorry, I double linked myself... :( The first one is just to my blog, the second to my post.

I'm very excited about the challenge though. It's something I have wanted to do for a long time!

Thank you for hosting!

J. Kaye -- thanks for hosting this challenge again in 2009. I LOVE doing this particular challenge because it's so challenging! Blessings all!

janetfaye said...

Thank you J. Kaye.

This is the first time I will be doing this and I am looking forward to it.

Lisalit said...

Don't know if I'll make it, but I'll give it a try! This year I am only at 58.

Whitney said...

I'm in! Thanks for hosting.

~Kylee in CT said...

I've decide to join after all. =)

Literary Feline said...

J. Kaye, are graphic novels okay to count as well?

I'm still debating whether to join. I've only once read over 100 books since I've been keep track. I may hit 75 this year, but I'm not sure. Numbers aren't so important to me, but something like this might encourage me to try and read more.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Sorry to be so late, again, with the welcome wagon!

Roni ~ It took me a few years to get up to a hundred. No worries if you don't make it. Either way, it's fun!

Maggie ~ No problem. Easily fixed.

Jan in Edmonds ~ Hey Jan! So glad you are joining in!!

janetfaye ~ Oh wow, I feel honored.

Lisalit ~ I didn't think I would my first year. I found out that I read more than what I'd originally thought. For the 100+, I list ALL books.

Whitney ~ So glad to have you!

~Kylee in CT ~ Yipppieee!

Literary Feline ~ Oh yes! ALL books are included, even ones for young readers, how-to's, coffee table books, and so on. :)

Jeanette said...

I think I will probably get about 100 books in this year so why not try again next year. I'll set my goal at 101 and see how it goes!
Thanks for hosting the challenge.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Jeanette ~ You are so welcome! Glad you are joining in.

My Two Blessings said...

J. Kaye. I sometimes don't follow directions very well. I'm in for the challenge. However, would you delete the first link I put down. It was wrong. The 2nd one I did right. :)

Looking forward to the fun.

Thanks

Ivy said...

hi we entered our blog. there are 2 of us who owns the blog but there will be separate lists.

Shawna said...

Delete the first "Shawna"--I don't read directions very well! I should hit 150 in 2009, but am setting my sights for next year on quality vs. quantity. Can't wait to follow along with every one!

Amanda said...

I don't see a Mr. Linky in this post - am I misunderstanding the instructions? Where do I go to sign up?

J. Kaye Oldner said...

chan ~ Welcome!

My Two Blessings ~ LOL! Yes, I have the same problem too.

Ivy ~ Feel free to put both of your names down.

Shawna ~ Already done! :)

Amanda ~ Mr. Linky is the box with "Name:" and "URL:"

Amanda said...

Yes, sorry, I do know what the Mr. Linky is, but I don't have the box for the name and URL. I can't see it in Firefox or IE. The only boxes in this post that I can see are the Yahoo Groups link, and the You Decide vote box.

There are actually two challenge webpages that I'm having the same problem with, while the Mr. Linky shows up no problem on others. I guess I'll try back tomorrow.

bookwormjoy said...

Ive signed up. Now to get that list ready!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Oh wow, never heard of that happening before. Amanda, I can post it for you if you'd like. If you have a post where you are linking your books, just post that here and I can do it for you.

Lori said...

Sorry to have not followed directions very well. I signed up again when I noticed my mistake.

Amanda said...

J. Kaye, not an overnight rest nor a restart nor my husband's mac internet browsers make it so I can see that Linky. I'm having the same problem on a different blog, too. I'd appreciate it so much if you could sign me up. My post is http://agignac.blogspot.com/2008/11/2009-reading-challenges.html

Thank you and sorry for the trouble. Hopefully my computer will quit acting up soon.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Amanda, I am so sorry about that. Well, I have you added, so no worries!

Amanda said...

Thank you! And of course, now that you've added me, the Linky is back. Aagh!! Stupid computers! :) Glad to be on board for 2009, and thanks again for your help.

S. Krishna said...

After much deliberation, I am in! I've set my goal for 250!

Meghan said...

I can't see the Mr. Linky either. =( I still want to join though - here is the page where I'll be listing my books, and here is where I've posted about the challenge. If Mr. Linky shows up for me soon, I'll stick it there instead.

betweenpages said...

For some crazy reason, I can't see Mr. Linky either. Bummer. Would you mind adding me to the challenge? My page where I'll be listing my progress is here and I blogged about the contest itself here!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Okay folks, it's not you. It's Mr. Linky. This is what they had posted:

"it's one of those days...

we're working on the outage

hope to be back very soon

very sorry for the inconvenience

and thank you for your patience!"

So it will be back in working order shortly. As soon as it does, I'll add your links. Just continue to leave them here in the comment section.

Meagan said...

Unfortunately for me, I forgot to write down about half the books I read! But I'll still be making the 100 for sure! For 2009 I am shooting for 150-200 books and I will be sure to write them all down this time!!

betweenpages said...

Mr. Linky decided to work with me today, J. Kaye, so I added my own link to the list. Thanks though!

I'm not going to make 100 for 2008 but I'll go for it again in 2009. Thanks for hosting. Sign me Up.

Shauna- Reading and Ruminations said...

Hi J. Kaye! I'm in. I'm on track to read 50 for 2008, but figured 2009 was the time to be ambitious and try to double the reading I do (plus, I'll be out of college, so I'll have more time!). I'm very excited for this.

liliana said...

I am slightly confused since on your blog the guigelines for this challenge say that we cannot start reading until January, 2009 but when I click on the link to yahoo groups this is what it says about this challenge:

Up for a serious challenge? Then come join us! Our goal is to read 100 or more books in one year.

You can start any time. If you haven't been keeping track of the books you've read, start when you join.

Which one is it then: anytime or January, 2009?

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Lori ~ No worries. Neither can I.

S. Krishna ~ Yeah! With as many books as you read, I am sure you can do this.

Meghan ~ I went to add your name and links, but it's already there. Mr. Linky showed up for you finally? It was having technical issues there, but I think it's okay now.

Jess ~ It wasn't you, it was Mr. Linky. The site was down for a few hours there.

Susan L. ~ You are officially posted! I'll be by with my welcome post soon.

Shauna- Reading and Ruminations ~ That's EXACTLY how I started out...lol! I signed up for the 50 and was amazed at how many books I read.

liliana ~ There are two 100+ going on. One started in 2008 and one in 2009. The one in 2009 is just for 2009. I can't stop the other one yet since there are still members working on that challenge. I figure by 2010, we'll all be in the same year...lol!

I'll update the group so that it makes since.

Mr. Linky is working now. I'll add this info above.

Barbara Boyer said...

My good friend, Colleen, introduced me to ya'll! So I am now going to be bold and make a ridiculous goal of 2009 books in 2009! Since I am a children's librarian, it will encourage me to read and blog about some great picture books...I guess I better start checking out a pile of books to be waiting for me for New Year's Eve after midnight! Any takers?????

~Kylee in CT said...

@Barbara Boyer:

Diana Raabe ~ I promise to do better than I did this year. ;)

I just joined and looking forward to it. After I passed my original goal this year of 50 books, I reached for 100, after passing 100, I set my goal for 200. I think I'm going to miss that by less than 10 =o( At least I know I should be able to do 100 in '09

Kisha said...

Oops, I realized I made a mistake in my previous post, it should have been I'm going to fall just short of 150 books, not 200. Maybe it was wishful thinking? Or probably just the benadryl lol

What a creative idea. If my friend, Tessa, of "Nuts and Muffin" fame, thinks it's a good idea, then so do I...She and I will have our own "challenge within a challenge" match since we are already colleagues in a "reading/writing/chatting/eating/drinking" group. I will post my choices after the holidays. With any luck someone will gift me with new books.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Glenn ~ Welcome to this challenge!

Serendipity ~ If you have the link to the post, I'll gladly add it.

miish ~ Yeah!

Patty ~ This might be a stupid sounding question, but hhich number is it?

talesofabookaddict ~ Totally agree!

Kisha ~ I wanted to make 200 in 2008 and didn't make it. I won't be trying for that many in 2009.

Count me in. :)
I'm looking forward to a great year of reading. My post is up, but I need to start thinking about my books.

I'm in for this ... because I've lost my mind :)

Tena said...

you can count me in on this challenge as well

J. Kaye Oldner said...

michellekae ~ Yippee! And I'll be officially around soon to welcome you. ;)

Jane ~ I am excited too! This will be my year in book challenges.

Maree ~ No...lol! Not lost your mind. This is a fun and exciting challenge. Even if participants don't make 100, they read more than they normally would have.

Tena ~ Yah! So glad you are in. :)

Ethan said...

Seriously? Seriously. Now I have to sign up for this.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

J. Kaye,
I'm changing blogs, and I'm leaving Live Journal for WordPress. Can you change my link in Mr. Linky to point to the post at my new blog rather than the old one?
http://readingandruminations.wordpress.com/2008/12/07/2009-100-books-reading-challenge/

I'm number 68 on the list.

Thanks!
Shauna- Reading and Ruminations

J. Kaye Oldner said...

ProdElektra ~ Welcome!

NOT Freddy Jones ~ No you can't. Glad you are joining!!

Shauna- Reading and Ruminations ~ How are you liking WP? Is it better than LiveJournal?

athena said...

Whoo-hoo!

I'm going to see how far I can get... It can't be THAT hard, right? =) 27% of each book a day... Hm.

Good luck to all!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Pizza ~ I don't want to lose you from this challenge, but also want you to know there is a 50 Reading Challenge.

The Hen (Charity) ~ No problem. I deleted it. Welcome to the challenge! Love your blog. :)

pinkflipflops said...

Hey! I signed up twice, first one was wrong. whoops.. new to blogspot, but not new to reading!

God's Rock Angel said...

I am working on my list - i think i might aim for about 150 - i'm started the year with like at least 3 Jane Austens so if it was a word count I'd be there! My link is correct but I need to edit the post!

Karin said...

I'll give it whirl. Don't have much more to say than that but have been reading about two a week since August anyway so it should be interesting.

I don't have much confidence in finishing 100 books but it sure is a great incentive to get budy oin that TBR pile!
Sorry, Number 157 is the wrong link. 158 is the correct link to my blog.

Thanks!!

pinkflipflops ~ LOL. No worries. Glad to have you join!

God's Rock Angel ~ Great! I have a few to start my list off too.

Karin ~ Great!

Nan ~ You are so welcome. :)

gaijinmama ~ There was a time I felt the same way. This year, I almost made it to 200.

Sharon ~ WAY TO GO!!!! You rock.

flmom ~ Sounds wonderful. :)

LizzieK8 ~ Nice blog. :)

Nan said...

Hi again! I changed my URL because I'm joining another one of your challenges! I think I'm getting hooked. I originally was #156 and now I'm 164. Sorry for the change, but I thought I needed a better way to organize more than one challenge. :-)

J. Kaye Oldner said...

No problem, Nan, I deleted the first one.

BookPsmith said...

Thank you J. Kaye for another great challenge. I am looking forward to this challenge to see if I can actually hit the 100, cut back on TV, and track my books read in 2009.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

BookPsmith ~ Early in 2008, I removed my TV and DirectTV box. Took it completely out and gave it to the kids. I knew if I didn't, I wouldn't do it. I stopped watching TV completely. I've started back to watching movies, but only on the computer. It's really changed my life and the funny part is, I don't miss it.

Becky said...

My link is here.

BookPsmith said...

J. Kaye - Fortunately when we moved a few years ago we decided not to renew our cable, otherwise I think I would turn into Jimmy Jet the TV Set. I have often thought of chucking the thing. I hate the feeling that I get after watching too much that those are hours I can never get back. Can't get rid of it though (husband's sports) but will have to practice self-control if I want to meet these challenges. I know you are right - life can only improve without it.

BecauseImTheMommy said...

I found you by mistake and would love to join the challenge. I have recently reawakened my love for reading and this challenge would really push me to keep it up in 2009. What if some of the books we read are rereads? It has been years since I read The Vampire Chronicles and never got into the last few, so I would like to read them all in order. Would that count?

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Becky ~ Welcome!!

BecauseImTheMommy ~ Yes, rereads count in this challenge. :)

BecauseImTheMommy said...

What have I gotten myself into? I'm in!

Kathrin said...

I'm in! I made it this year despite the fact that I forgot writing down a few books I read and without a challenge, but I love challenges :)

J. Kaye Oldner said...

BecauseImTheMommy ~ LOL! So glad you'll be joining us in this fun madness!

Kathrin ~ I am so glad you said that. I really have to watch myself. I will jump to the next book and forget too.

Lindsay said...

I just joined. I felt like I read a lot this year, but nowhere near 100. I'm liking the sound of this challenge. I will definitely help me expand my list.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Lindsay ~ It's awesome that you are joining!

Renee said...

Count me in! :D

Now I have an excuse to buy 40 pounds of books in the new year!

Donna said...

Thanks for the Challenge. I have it posted and the first few books I plan to read up on my blog.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Renee ~ LOLOL! I never thought about it that way. :) Welcome to the challenge.

Donna ~ Welcome! So glad you are joining in the fun. I'll be over in a minute!

Brittanie said...

I have read over 250 books this year for the 100+ challenge. I look forward to 2009 and hope I can at least hit the 200 mark. :)

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Brittanie ~ That is fantastic! I missed my 2008 mark of 200. Maybe in 2009.

Clair said...

I guess I don't know if I will sign up, but I guess every year I make that goal if you count all the children's books that I read to my students, nieces and nephews, plus the 50 or more that are adult books I read for myself.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Clair ~ Yes, ALL books are counted in this challenge.

Linda Jacobs said...

Thanks for hosting this! What a great way to keep a list of what I read. I'm so mad at myself for not keeping track of the books I've read over the years. oh, well, better late than never!

meg89 said...

Thanks for hosting this challenge! I don't know if I'll make it to 100, but I can be very competitive, so maybe this will be the motivation I need!

meg89 said...

Do you count rereads? I read Pride and Prejudice about 3 years ago, but I know it's on the syllabus for a class I'm taking in the Spring, so I'll be reading it again.

Sheri said...

Thanks for hosting! This will be fun. :o)

mominsanity said...

This is going to be the one that is the most fun for me! Thanks for hosting!

Jules said...

This year I'm going to make it. Because I'm starting it at the beginning of the year, not 7 or 8 months into the year :)

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Linda Jacobs ~ I understand. I didn't start until last year.

meg89 ~ Yes, rereads do count.

Sheri & mominsanity ~ You two are so very welcome!

Jules ~ That makes a huge difference. :)

Katie said...

Although I didn't participate in the 2008 Challenge, I am so happy to be able to report having read 103 Adult Novels so far! I have also read countless children's books but did not keep track of those. I'm looking forward to this challenge as well as the 2 others I have joined!
