2009 Audiobook Challenge

Here are the guidelines:

1) You can join anytime as long as you don’t start reading your books prior to 2009.

2) This challenge is for 2009 only. The last day to have all your books read is December 31, 2009.

3) You can join anytime between now and December 31, 2009.

4) When you sign up under Mr. Linky, list the direct link to your post where your audiobooks will be listed. If you list just your blog’s URL, it will be removed. If you don’t have a blog, leave the URL blank.

4) You do not have to list your books ahead of time. If you decide to, you can change them as you go.

5) Our goal is to listen to 12 audiobooks in 2009. No need to list your books now. You can do so as you go.

6) Feel free to post a link to your reviews in the comment section below. That way, we can visit your blog and read your review.

7) If you have any questions, feel free to ask below or email me at jkayeoldner@yahoo.com. Comments usually get a quicker response.

This would be such a fun challenge to join. Alas, it has taken me over two months to listen to 3/4 of one audio book! That's what I get for choosing an audiobook that is not kid friendly. And how much kid-free time do I have? :)

J. Kaye Oldner said...

And do you know, I just realized I didn't spell audio books correctly...lol! It's been a busy day.

Beth F said...

I'm in and I've posted ( here). I'll come back when Mr. Linky decides to be nice.

Audiobooks is often spelled as one word in the industry . . . either way is acceptable.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Beth F. ~ I'll get you added as soon as I fix how Steve removed Mr. Linky...lol!

Beth F said...

Mr. Linky is back!! Thanks J. Kaye.

I'm looking forward to this challenge.

Debbie ~ Me too!

I finally got hooked on audiobooks as I live 13 miles from town and work 2-3 days each week so have a little bit of a drive. Have taken to driving slowly as I want to see what happens next LOL. I don't do abridged though. Hope I can get through 12 in the year. Thanks

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Jenny ~ I don't do abridged either. I don't see how one can do so and still enjoy the story. Welcome to this challenge!

Nan Greenwald said...

I love to listen to books. I average 6-8 books a month and it has gotten to the point where I never listen to the radio in my car any more. I always have a book going.

Nan Greenwald said...

I bdon't have a book blog where can I post the books I have read for the month?

Sharon said...

This will be fun. I listen to audiobooks all the time, driving to and from work and on my iPod while I clean house! Can the books I listen to be used on other challenges, specifically the 100 book challenge?

Thanks for hosting!
Sharon

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Nan Greenwald ~ At one time, I was listening to that many. I've cut back some. Now that you are a member of the Yahoo Groups, you can post there. Of course here too, but you can open a file at the Yahoo Groups and keep track of the books you read.

Sharon ~ I so agree. Love audios. I am also looking forward to getting more ideas for new titles.

Kathrin said...

Just a question before I sign up: Do I have to make up my list of audio books for the challenge before I sign up or can I add the books as I listen my way through the challenge?
I have an audible account and get two audio books each month, but don't know yet which books I'll get in 2009.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Kathrin ~ No, and I'll add that to the guidelines. :)

Kathrin said...

Great, J. Kaye! Then you can definitely count me in :)

SueFitz said...

sounds like fun - count me in. Means I have to listen to what I already have.

Kathrin ~ Welcome!

SueFitz ~ I only have two, so I'll be looking around for more...lol!

Robin ~ So glad you think so! I love audiobooks.

Grilsgood ~ That's exactly what started me on audiobooks. I no longer am on the road as much, but I love to listen when I am.

Ex Libris ~ It's back up! I'll add your information. And welcome!!

naida ~ My life wouldn't be the same without them!

Irish ~ Thanks for letting me know about the sidebar! :)

Mary Burkey ~ If you are indeed joining the challenge, that's great, but your post seems more like an advertisement. I am leaving the one in the comment section, but you to leave one in the top, you'll need to post about this challenge on your blog and link to it.

April ~ Hey! Great news. I have GOBS for audio giveaways coming up. Cool huh? It's all thanks to Hachette Book Group! I'll be posting about it soon.

What a great idea! Not only are audio books great for the commute, they are also great while exercising, walking or jogging, cooking dinner and anytime your hands and/or eyes are busy but your mind is free.

My blog is dedicated to everything audio and has many resources for the audio book enthusiast.

I'll update here.

Bless you for not making us do up a list. I get the from teh library and just snag whatever looks good. I did 6 last year, so this will double me...unless I count the ones we do for teh kids...maybe I shoudl sign them up!

LizzieK8 said...

Great fun! Knitting and "reading" at the same time!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Intergalactic Bookworm ~ I did for last year, but not for this one. I found that I can't keep more than one blog updated. I REALLY wish I could. That would make life easier on my.

Jenna Bayley-Burke ~ Had to laugh at your comment. There is NO way I could make a list either. :)

LizzieK8 ~ I seriously thought about getting into needle work just to listen to more audios...lol

April said...

Hi J.Kaye! I finally got around to posting about the challenge and went ahead and reposted my name and challenge link. I hope that's ok. Now, to just remember to tag each time I review, lol! I can't wait for this one!! Thanks so much for hosting it!!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

April ~ No problem at all! I deleted the first one for you. :)

BookPsmith said...

Hello everyone. I am new here. My blog is currently under construction (read I haven't thought of anything to say yet) but I wanted to participate in a couple of challenges and didn't want to wait until I had a couple of posts under my belt.

I am not sure exactly how the challenges work as for as linking or checking in but I will learn. Excuse me if there are a few hiccups along the way.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

BookPsmith ~ Welcome! That's exactly how I learn. Jump right on in there and it you make a mistake, that's just part of life. Right?

Kitty said...

I love to listen to a good audiobook at work. Now I can find some new ones. Thanks for hosting this.

care020 said...

I just realized that I did the very thing we were asked not to do. I used the URL for my blog and not the post on which I am going to post the audiobooks I listen to in 2009. Check for posts at the URL below:

http://lovethejourney.blogspot.com/2008/12/2009-audiobook-challenge.html

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Kitty ~ Remember that you can list them as you go.

care020 ~ No worries. I have your URL updated. :)

Kristi said...

I won a couple of audio books in the last month - so they are going to be first on my list!

I am going to fill in my list as I go!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Kristi ~ That's what I do. There is no way I could ever list all my books ahead of time. I could list a few, but all? No way!

Deb said...

This should be fun. I listen to a lot of audiobooks while walking & doing things around the house. Thanks for hosting!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Deb ~ Welcome! I am looking forward to it too. Can you believe the new year begins in a few days!?!

Angie said...

So I don't know what audiobooks they will be. I've been working on Eldest forever. But I do love the idea (and we just got a few Playaways for our library) so I am up for the challenge!

Corwink said...

OK I'm all signed up. You have the best challenges!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Angie ~ That's fine. Most people list as they go.

Corwink ~ Thank you! I am so glad you think so.

I'm new to blogging but I'd like to get started this year! So joining challenges seems like a good way to jump in!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Breeze144 ~ You are so right. This is a perfect way to jump in. Welcome to this challenge!

Dorraine said...

This is a challenge I can definitely get behind! I'm in! With a subscription to audible.com AND simplyaudio.ca, I sure HOPE I can get through twelve! My fiance bought me a snazzy little ghetto blaster for the kitchen that has an adapter just to fit my iPod for when I head in to cook, so that'll help!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Dorraine ~ That is great to have! We are too cheap. I plug in my MP3 to some extra computer speakers we have....lol!

DarlingDiva said...

This is a great challenge. I must say that I think it is a bit easy on my part. I commute 2 1/2 hours a day and audio books are the only thing that keep me sane. I have read...welll...loads, this year alone.
I will change jobs in a few months and my commute will change so it will be interesting to see If I keep this up. I am looking forward to it.

lilly said...

I made it! I have finally completed the list for this challenge. Yay! It is listed within the post for my 2009 challenges.

Cindi said...

I am looking forward to this challenge. I can listen to audio books while I knit and while I am in the car.

Keesh said...

I always have an audiobook playing while on my way to work...music these days is the pits! So, I know this a challenge I will enjoy.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

DarlingDiva ~ That's why I began listening to audios! I was on the road so much and traffic was driving me insane. Listen to books took my mind off the negative.

lilly ~ Know that you can change the list if needed.

Cindi ~ Me too! Welcome!

Keesh ~ Oh yes! I rarely listen to the radio station any more.

Smokey said...

Driving is much more enjoyable while listening to a book! I'm in!

Lorianne said...

Count me in! (Here is my blog post to that effect.) I listened to a slew of free library downloads during 2008, but I didn't keep track of them on my blog. So for me, tracking my listening habits will be the real challenge of 2009.

Happy New Year (and good reading) to everyone!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Smokey ~ I second that!

Lorianne ~ So glad to have you here. Love your blog.

Challenge #5 for 2009 lol

I listen to books while driving (two or three times a week into town), while cooking and doing dishes. Tried a couple times at night in bed, but I fall asleep

A list I belong to is called GoodReads, and there are lots of good reviews and recommendations there ... broken up into categories ie mystery, adventure, classics, audo, etc

J.Kaye, love your Maxine icon

i look forward to this challenge-my son and i are starting with harry potter #7. gotta get to the library quick! our local library has a great selection. being a knitter it's to have discovered a way to knit and read at the same time!

Janice, wooly daisy, and Readingrat ~ Welcome to the audiobook reading challenge. So glad you all joined!

Vegan Librarian said...

Like I mentioned on my post when I signed up, I love to listen to audiobooks in my car, even with my very short drive now. Sometimes they are better than the book! I suggest starting with Feed (YA) or Eat, Pray, Love (adult).

Joanna5g said...

Looking forward to this! My first book is "Dewey, the Library Cat"

Stina said...

One thing I love about my local library is its excellent audiobook selection. I'm a very visual person, so listening to books can be difficult for me, but road trips and commuting have pretty well cured me of that! :-)

J. Kaye said...

bobcatbrarian ~ Me too!

Vegan Librarian ~ Thank you for the recommendations!

Joanna5g ~ LOL! I have that one in my stack too.

Stina ~ I feel that way about mine. I love that the download selection is growing too. It's the reason I purchased a MP3.

judyv12306 said...

I would love to join but I have no idea what my URL is or even if I have a URL. And what is Mr Linky that so many talk about. Sometimes I just think I am too old for this stuff.

J. Kaye said...

judyv12306 ~ Do you see the black box that says Mister Linky's Magical Widgets? That's Mr. Linky.

MonieG said...

I just joined in. I've listened to 3 so far this year.

Mirawyn said...

I love audio books, because I can listen to them during my morning commute while knitting or crocheting! My husband and I also select audio books to listen to in the car.

I've listened to three this month; my husband and I just started this week on one. I know I'll listen to twelve without a challenge. I'm taking the challenge as a commitment to review my selections!

Just Mom said...

Darn - I messed up my Mr. Linky and didn't link it to the post....can you remove it and I'll come back and fix it? Not the best start, eh?

J. Kaye said...

MonieG ~ Welcome!

Mirawyn ~ How neat that your husband does too.

Just Mom ~ It's corrected. No worries.

April said...

J.Kaye - do you want us to come back here and post a link to each audio review, after we are finished? Here is my first one - Plum Spooky: http://cafeofdreams.blogspot.com/2009/02/plum-spooky-by-janet-evanovich.html
Now I am listening to The Lace Reader - so far so good!

MarthaE said...

I have signed up for this as I love to listen to audio books. Since I get two books a month from Audible plus pick up others I am making my goal as 36 if that is okay!!!

Nana*2*4 said...

I signed up as Mom and I always have a book in the car. We found our way to the audio book path via Cracker Barrel, since then we have joined the library. We have been quick to tell all of the travelers that visit here in Florida how wonderful audio books are. Audio books are such a great way to fill time that before was a waste.

Karina said...

this is a cool challenge. i definitely know which audiobook i'm gonna start listening to.

2 36 Sedaris, David WWhen You are Engulfed in Flames NC 512 lg
In this Sedaris' 6th essay collection, he focuses on his family who make memorable and often hilarious appearances. In The Understudy, the Sedaris siblings band together to battle the odious babysitter Mrs. Peacock, while in Town and Country, Sedaris and sister Amy discuss what their father would be most offended to find on his daughter's coffee-table (hint: The Joy of Sex comes in a distant second). Each was bettr than the one before it.

12 98 Koontz, Dean Velosity
In the blink of an eyte, Bartender Billy Wiles's life spirals out of control after he finds a note on his windshield telling him that he has a choice. He finds a typewritten note under the windshield wiper of his car." "If you don't take this note to the police and get them involved, I will kill a lovely blond schoolteacher. If you do take this note to the police, I will instead kill an elderly woman active in charity work. You have six hours to decide. The choice is yours." Then the killer targts people he knows and lins him to the crimes He worries that his comatose finacee Barbara will be hurt.

whahoo...i added a new shelf call "Listened 2009 ->" to my blog. out of the 20 book listed, only one is older than 2009...well, on my complete list there are copies that i have both in hard copy and audio (tape and cd) but those are listed primarily as books. There would be more pre 2009 but I have not listed them yet...don't know that I even remember all of them.
