You all know what a supporter of the library my family and I are. What better way to pay homage than by having a reading challenge in 2009? Since we are all different, there will be three sizes of challenges.
** The first is to read 12 books from your local library in 2009.
** The second is to read 25 books from your local library in 2009.
** The third is to read 50 books from your local library in 2009.
You decide which one of the three challenges is best for you.
Here are the guidelines:
1) You can join anytime as long as you don’t start reading your books prior to 2009.
2) This challenge is for 2009 only. The last day to have all your books read is December 31, 2009.
3) You can join anytime between now and December 31, 2009.
4) When you sign up under Mr. Linky, list the direct link to your post where your library books will be listed. If you list just your blog’s URL, it will be removed. If you don’t have a blog, leave the URL blank.
5) Our goal is to read 12, 25, or 50 books checkout from our local library in 2009. Please decide which when you sign up and don’t change it.
6) These can be audios, downloads, children’s, YA. As long as it’s a book, format and target age group does not matter.
7) Feel free to post a link to your reviews in the comment section below. That way, we can visit your blog and read your review.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask below or email me at jkayeoldner@yahoo.com. Comments usually get a quicker response.
***Update: You do not have to decided on your books ahead of time. You can add or subtract from your list during the year.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 315 of 315I'm a little bit late to the party, but late is better than never right? :-)
meghan...or is it? ~ Did you get signed up? If you have any trouble, please email and I'll see what I can do.
lovedandamazed ~ Wonderful! Glad to have you!
S. Krishna ~ It's never too late. Glad you are here!
I just got my page up for this challenge
http://kissmybook.blogspot.com/2009/02/library-challenge-2009.html
I am immensely lazy, so reading even 12 books that are not personally delivered to my door by Amazon is gonna be a challenge for me!
I got my page up and I am even being more harsh with myself. I am only counting the books I read starting from this week on! Youch! I missed a whole month where I could've gotten my read on! lol
i need some incentive to keep reading, and i think this'll do it for me. plus i never buy books, so it shouldn't be too hard
Since I rarely buy books and almost exclusively read at the library, it's probably shameful that I am only doing the 25 book challenge. I've just never kept track of my reading for a whole year, so I thought I'd start small. 25 books for me.
I thought I signed up for this a while ago. I left my info on Mr. Linky and this afternoon I'll be at the library picking up a reserve book they called about yesterday.
I think this is a great idea and I'm so glad I found this Challenge...I actually live overseas but our library (which I use regularly) luckily and happily for me has a large English section! Thanks for hosting this.
This is a great idea. I don't have a blog, but I'm doing it anyway....um....if I can figure out how, exactly. I'll commit to 25 books.
I just stumbled upon this, and I'm looking forward to participating! I keep a paper reading journal, so I was able to go back through and post my books for January and the earlier part of February.
I'm a librarian (not a public librarian) and I love anything that will support libraries.
Great challenge! I'm hoping to complete the 50 books by the end of the year.
I would love to be able to make a list from my public library except that I do not have one. The target date for our library is end of 2011. I am part of the library committee that is doing fundraisers to support what goes inside, so my list will be skimpy (only books I can buy or win).
I just joined and so excited. I now need to figure out where to post the # of books I want to read. Toodles
Wahey - I'm #233! That's got to be lucky in some culture somewhere in the world, doesn't it?
And yep, I'm going for the big one: 50 library books this year... here goes!
Whoops! I didn't put the direct URL to my post, I put the general one (but I am tracking on the sidebar). Here is the link to the specific post that I'll keep updated.
http://thermalgal.com/2009/03/20/2009-support-your-local-library-challenge/
All of these books are from the public library. I go so often the staff know me and frequently recommend books.
I'm so excited about this! Who doesn't love supporting the local library. Thanks so much for setting this up!
Shawna ~ Welcome to the challenge! Your comments aren't working on your blog. I tried a couple of times and nothing...
J. Kaye, I have finished reading the 12 books I signed up for. Obviously, I grossly underestimated how many books I read from my library!! What was I thinking?? Anyway, here is the link to my post that lists the books completed, so it's easy to read all my reviews. Next time I'll set a more challenging goal! And, of course, I'll continue reading library books for the rest of 2009! Thanks for hosting this challenge.

Jenni ~ No problem! I have it updated. Thanks for giving me the link.
Thank you so much for letting me know about the comments problem. I fixed it!
This is my first reading challenge. I am thrilled! I cannot believe I didn't discover this 'new world' earlier. I neglected to note the (50) after enrolling via Mr. Linky. Is there any way to correct that?
Also, thanks so much for included us 'non-blogges'.
Can't wait to sign up with the Yahoo group.
BTW, can I include library books I have read in 2009 prior to today? Not sure if I will, but just in case....
Thanks much, Coni
Coni ~ Yes. The beginning date is January 1st of this year. You can post all the books you read from that date to now. :)
Welcome to the challenge! I can update your info by adding a (50) beside your name.
This is an awesome challenge. I'm a member of our Friends of the Library and my mom is a librarian - so this challenge was a given when I was picking the four I'd do this year. I did list my 50 and posted before I caught the update (teachers never read all the way through directions, it seems! :-), so my list may change, but am hoping it stands for now - my wish lists on the library site have been standing for about a year, and this will be a great way to clean them off.
Elisabeth ~ Welcome to the challenge!
I'm looking forward to spending less $$ in the bookstore and utilizing my local library lots more! Thanks for the challenge!
mlhliterarylounge ~ Thrilled to have you!
This is a great challenge. Thanks!
I'm going to try this!! My first Challenge, yea! I am at our library every week so this should be cinch!
How did I not know about this challenge until today?! The librarians all know me at my favorite library... My list of completed books (along with information on where my reviews/ratings are) is posted here.
I've already read nearly 40 books from my library. Wish I'd found this sooner!
I'm so excited about this challenge! I just love our library. If you ever have a Library DVD Challenge, I'll be all over that, too!
5elementknitr ~ Welcome to this reading challenge! Glad to see you are going for 50!
trek ~ That's okay! Glad you are joining now. We'll be having another one in 2010 as well.
Chris ~ Sorry it's taken so long to get back with you! Spammer Ed has made life a little crazy here. Glad you are joining in!
I'm always just shy of making the 52nd or 152nd or, in this case, 252nd person to sign up!
What a fantastic challenge - thanks for hosting this. I love books and anything free...bless you, libraries!
52 Faces - Glad to have you joining us!
Yay! Just signed up and entered my books for the year so far.
This sounds absolutely brilliant!
I get most of my books from the library and only buy those that I've usually read and want to keep in our scant shelf space.
I have a question regarding the mechanics - will we be expected to review all the library books that we read? That impacts which level I end up picking.
And another rather simple question about public libraries. I borrow from my local library all the time but they don't make any money off of me (except the occasional late fee), do the various state or local governments keep track of how many people visit the library or how many books are checked out? Is it that increased use of the libraries (like now with the internet and job training, etc) would prevent the slashing of budgets and hours because of letters that we write? The library administrators would be able to effectively use stats on visits and items checked out to prevent any further reduction of funding?
Thanks again - this is wonderful!
gaby317
I'm late to the game on this one but I had to join - I couldn't live w/o my library. Not only would my pocketbook suffer but it's possible someone would have to move out of the house to make room.
Kat with a K ~ Glad you are joining!
gaby317 ~ Reviewing is optional. You don't have to review any. Yes, libraries keep track of all that good stuff. Funding depends on the patrons.
The rest of your questions will be better answered by a librarian. ;)
Carrie K ~ Never too late! :)
I just found this book challenge through my fellow blogger,Carrie(of My Middle name is Patience)
I adore and frequent our local libraries almost exclusively...
I will say 25 books as it is almost June, but it could be more..lol
Was I was removed from the list because I didn't link the proper page on my blog(oops!)?
Anyway I am trying again....
I am still saying that it will be 25 but possibly more..
:)
merrimerri ~ Welcome to the challenge! Have fun!
this seems really fun, its my first book challenge, and I'm hoping I'll finish it. Thanks for the additional information J. Kaye!
oops - I was in such a hurry to sign up for this great challenge that I did not post the right link. I have rectified that now (sorry!!!)
Hope I'm not too late the join in on the fun! I've posted with Mr. Linky and will post my reviews soon.
Quick question. Where do bloggers post links to their book reviews. I thought it was here in the comments, but I don't see any posted here. The Yahoo groups seems to be for non-bloggers. Any advice? Thanks.
If I just found out about this challenge, can I count books I've read previous to signing up in 2009?
Erica ~ Yes, as long as you started reading the books in 2009.
Pam ~ You aren't too late. :) Sign up is anytime.
Sorry Pam, I saw the second question after I posted this one. Mr. Linky widget has been having technical issues. You should be able to see it now. If not, email me and I'll help out.
K well I finished this. Here is the link to my blog. It shows the top post with the list of them all and then the reviews but only some come up. If you go forward not sure if it comes up with the rest or not. This was fun Thanks.

Thanks for hosting this! I'm committing to read (at least) 25 books from the library
I've been reading up a storm! LOL!

Natalie
clueless ~ Welcome to the challenge!
bookinn ~ Keep up the good work. :)
You come up with the best challenges! My goal is to read 50 library books this year. I love my library!
Alexia561 - Glad to have ya!
Thanks for hosting this - I love the local library and think it's such a great resource. I'm going to do 50 books and look forward to completing it. Thanks :)I'll post my reviews soon!
I'm joining now, with 40 more books to read in 6 mos! I hope I can do it!
Oh is my granddaughter ever going to love me. I am going for the 50 book challenge. I usually check out 5 - 10 for me and then 5 - 10 to read to my granddaughter.
Sandra Stiles ~ So glad you are planning on joining this challenge too!
Elspeth ~ Glad you are joining in!
I've finally caved and decided to take part in this nifty endeavor. I can only go so long before I need to check out the new books I can't afford at the library! ^_~
I might join. I'm switching schools so I just have to check out whether their are novels in the library instead of just research books.
Better late than never!
I've memorized my library card number I use it so much, I love my library. They even know my name!
Nonna (Chèli) - Welcome to the book challenge. I noticed there was some problem with the links to Mr. Linky. Did you get those straight?
Originally, I wasn't going to sign up for this challenge, because I wanted to read more of my OWN books this year! Hence my RYOB (Read Your Own books) challenge! LOL.
But, since I've already completed what I wanted to complete for my challenge, and I'm STILL reading Library books like crazy, I think I'll jump in now (half way through the year! Sheesh!), and list my books. ;)
Thanks for leaving this challenge open! :D
~MizB
I'm listing my books under Library Loot, the first six are dated June 22, and I'll update/post new books every three weeks or so. I love my library and use it regularly. Unfortunately, Ohio is considering cutting in half allocations for public state libraries. Gotta get my reading in fast :)
I've been on a challenge kick so I decided to join since I have been using my library a lot latley!
I'm going to give this a try. It's my first challenge so I'll see how it goes. I'm starting a little late in the year but I've already got some read so I think I can make it. Hopefully.
I would like to join this challenge. I would like to participate in the 50 book challenge. I do visit my local library as much as possible. My next trip should be this weekend when I pick up about 6 more books to read. I should have the challenge completed by the end of the year.
I have a question. I do not blog. What other option do I have to post my readings?
Thanks,
Jen
sweethaven ~ You don't need to have a blog. There is a Yahoo Groups set up where you can use the database to list your books. When you sign up for the Yahoo Groups, just let me know in the comment section that you are Jen trying to sign up for the library challenge, and I'll approve your membership immediately.
Becca ~ You can list the books you read earlier in the year also.
Confused about signing up without a blog - really want to sign up for this but if I leave the URL blank it asks for one. Please help.
budletsmom at yahoo dot com
nevermind last question as I figured it out and appear to be in.
I plan to do at least 50 books - may already be there - luckily I can check my progress at my local library and everything starts with the new year. Can't wait to start logging all the books I have read so far.
Patti (budletsmom)
i go 2 my library all the time. that's where i get all my books. i'm going 4 the 50.
Fayeflame ~ Glad to have ya!
I've just finished my twelve books, so I've decided to challenge myself a little more by going to 25 for the year :)
What the hay. I've read a few books from the library. I can probably make it to 25 by the time the year is over.
Rabid Fox ~ glad you are joining the challenge!
Looks like we caught the train just in time for the caboose! Hawaii Book Blog will sign up to try and read/post 25 books by the end of the year!
Thanks for starting this challenge and goodluck to everyone still reading!
Misty ~ Glad to have ya!
I'm almost done! 10 more to go ... and I have 4 more at home ready to go!
knitv ~ Way to go!
Sign me up. Thanks for hosting this challenge. I hope I finish it in time.
Rachel~ Glad you are joining us!
I joined this challenge back in January but couldn't get Mr. Linky to work then. However, having successfully used it in another challenge, I thought I'd try here again and it worked! I've posted the link which will show the 11 books I've read so far for this challenge. :)
Great Challenge! I joined. I listed the books so far this year that have been checked out. If I need to start my list from the time I started the challenge, comment or email me and I will start it over.
Thanks - Pixie weblogbooks[@]gmail[dot]com
http://pageturners-underthecover.blogspot.com/2009/08/2009-support-your-local-library.html
Colleen ~ Not sure if I responded, but glad you have it working now! It was Mr. Linky, no doubt!
I'm really late to the game, but I'm going for 50 books anyway!
Is it too late to sign up for this challenge?
I'm sick of taking back unread books to the library because I have to read other books. This will help change that! Only going to do 12 but you never know I might get more read.
I love this challenge! I've actually been doing it all year already, so I might as well join up, too. Already a quarter of the way to the big 5-0, so I'll try for that one. Going to go blog my intent now. :)
Went to the library this morning and re-borrowed some books for this challenge. I'm hoping to get 3 read in September.
Alaine - Queen of Happy Endings ~ OH MY GOD! It's September already!?! (lol) That's how I have felt about this whole year. :)
I know J. Kaye, where has this year gone. Still 4 months to complete this challenge should be ok!
PearLady ~ Super! Glad to have you!
Lawral the Librarian ~ Feel free to count all the library books you've read this year.
How would short stories fit in? I borrow some anthologies from the library to read particular authors and don't read the entire book.
I've read 14 full length library books so far, but I'd like to know what to do with the short stories before I commit (post on my blog) to the challenge.
Jo ~ Just list them however you'd like. The only challenge that gets detailed about shorts is the 100+ Reading Challenge.
I am hopefully going to nail your first challenge with the little bit of 2009 left to us as part of my own challenge to read the Modern Library's Board's List of the 100 Best Books of All Time. Am reading "The Magnificent Ambersons" by Booth Tarkington right now (courtesy of Scott Co. Library!).

Follow the Quest!
SocrMom78 ~ I just left a comment on your blog. Please reread the sign up instructions. If you need assistance, please email.
I've just started my first book, The Magnificent Ambersons by Booth Tarkington....anyone looking for a great period read and a fast moving plot should grab this one! As part of my challenge to read 100 books in 100 days, I hope to be able to meet your challenge as well!
I just posted my link in Mr. Linky for my Finished post!

My first two posts have been entered in Mr. Linky - they're both great mysteries - "Death Goes on Retreat" and "A Fountain Filled with Blood". I'm definitely going to be reading more in these series. Thank goodness our local library system has a good selection of each writer.

Jane Smiley's Private Life is promising to be a very good read.
