The 2009 Support Your Local Library Challenge

You all know what a supporter of the library my family and I are. What better way to pay homage than by having a reading challenge in 2009? Since we are all different, there will be three sizes of challenges.

** The first is to read 12 books from your local library in 2009.
** The second is to read 25 books from your local library in 2009.
** The third is to read 50 books from your local library in 2009.

You decide which one of the three challenges is best for you.

Here are the guidelines:

1) You can join anytime as long as you don’t start reading your books prior to 2009.

2) This challenge is for 2009 only. The last day to have all your books read is December 31, 2009.

3) You can join anytime between now and December 31, 2009.

4) When you sign up under Mr. Linky, list the direct link to your post where your library books will be listed. If you list just your blog’s URL, it will be removed. If you don’t have a blog, leave the URL blank.

5) Our goal is to read 12, 25, or 50 books checkout from our local library in 2009. Please decide which when you sign up and don’t change it.

6) These can be audios, downloads, children’s, YA. As long as it’s a book, format and target age group does not matter.

7) Feel free to post a link to your reviews in the comment section below. That way, we can visit your blog and read your review.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask below or email me at jkayeoldner@yahoo.com. Comments usually get a quicker response.

***Update: You do not have to decided on your books ahead of time. You can add or subtract from your list during the year.

Wheee - I'm first in line! I love our local library and am always checking books out - this is a great idea J. Kaye and I am looking forward to completing this one!!!

Beth F said...

Thanks for hosting. And thanks for stopping by. If you explain how a round robin for my Weekly Discoveries would work, I'd be happy to host it.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Kara ~ I do too and I'd never seen one supporting the library. I know there are others out there too.

Beth F. ~ Booking Through Thursday is a round robin. Friday Finds, Mailbox Mondays, and Waiting on Wednesdays are some others. Does that help?

Beth F said...

Yep. I understand. I'll set it up as soon as I get Mr. Linky working (later this week). Thanks for the encouragement.

I'm committing to 12. My library is a 10 minute walk from here so it could be many more.

I'm in for the dozen books a year challenge.

I've seen how much work the 100+ books a year is and that's not for me!

Dar said...

Another I'll join. I'll be back tomorrow with my link.

Book Zombie (Joanne) said...

This is such a great idea, it's going to be so much fun! I will be back with my link soon :)

Debi said...

Well, despite the fact that I'm supposed to be severely limiting my challenges, I can't resist this one! I'll be back soon with my link.

Lezlie said...

I'm in! Going for the fifty. . . :-)

Jeanne said...

Um, I'm always reviewing library books. Is one of the points of this challenge to link to different reviews and see what all's available in libraries? Is a challenge just to keep some people reading? Sorry if these are stupid questions; I've been trying to figure out the whole challenge thing.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Beth F ~ You are very welcome. I am excited!

~Kylee in CT ~ Yah! Glad you are joining!

naida ~ I haven't gotten my post yet either. I was so busy setting up the challenges, I didn't leave time for me to sign up.

Steve Oldner ~ Finally a challenge family can join in.

Dar ~ I was hoping I could get my post today...it might be tomorrow...lol!

Book Zombie (Joanne) ~ Yeah!

Debi ~ I am not limiting the number of challenges. If anything, I will be adding more. :) BUT - I will limit the number of books.

Lezlie ~ You are my hero!

Jeanne ~ No, this isn't anything officially tied into the library. This is a challenge to support your local library by checking out more books and reading them. Did I clear that up? If not, I'll try again. :)

Ladytink_534 said...

A good majority of the books I read are from the library so I guess I'll do the third one.

Ramya said...

i'm definitely in as well!:) i read a lot of books from the local library and this will be a good way to keep tab of the books i borrow from the library..shall post about it soon and get back to ya!:)

Dave Donelson said...

What a great idea, J.Kaye. I'm a library trustee and spend a lot of time raising awareness of the importance of libraries to all of us. It's more important now than ever, when budgets are being cut left and right. Philadelphia just announced closure of eleven branches and Trenton, NJ, four! I'll sign up for the challenge soon (gotta fix a blog to handle it), so save room for me.

SueFitz said...

this one sounds like find - I guess this means I need to get my libary card out of the moth balls.

Lana B said...

I'm going to try for 25. I'll read significantly more books than that, and I have to find the library in my new town. Guess this'll be some incentive.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Ladytink_534 ~ I'd say I am running about half. But my kids and husband are where you are. I think Jimmy & Nona could do a 100.

Ramya ~ Sounds great!

Dave Donelson ~ I didn't know that. How neat. So glad you stopped by. I need to chat with you...promise to get with you this week.

SueFitz ~ That's right! Get it out and shine it up. The fun time is almost here.

Lana B ~ Yes it is! I am going for 25 too.

Jill said...

What a fantastic idea...I'm in!!

Anastasia said...

This looks like fun! I'm in for 25.

Jeska said...

I am going for 50. The vast majority of the books I read are from the library . . . signing up for this challenge actually feels a little bit like cheating . . . but I'm okay with that. It's a good one!!

Veens said...

I HAVE TO FIRST FIND A LIBRARY lol!

yep - i have not found a library yet ...how SICK of me i KNOW!

but this is the motivation -that will make me find one :)

Suey said...

Hey! Now THIS is a challenge I can handle! :) I'll be going for the 25 book amount and will be back soon with my link! Great idea.

jenclair said...

I'm very supportive of our local library. I'm so grateful for access to all of the free books, and even with the occasional fines, it is still a bargain!

zquilts said...

I'll go for level 2 r 3. I am on the Board of of Library - it rocks! Where would the world be without libraries!

Kerry said...

I want to play too.

As someone with a very bad habit of buying books (I like to be able to read them whenever I'm ready rather than being limited to borrowing times), a commitment to use the library more is a great idea.

Jessalina said...

I joined this one too!

SuziQoregon said...

Oh - I love this one. I use my libraries all the time. I work in one county and live in another so I've got access to two wonderful library systems. I'll probably end up signing up for the 25, but will ponder that a bit before I officially join. Thanks for not making us decide on the books ahead of time.

I'd like to keep my list on a sidebar on my blog - on the post I link when I join, is it OK if I just make a note that the list will be updated on my sidebar throughout the year? I don't want to have to go back and re-edit an old post all the time.

Whitney said...

This is a fantastic idea! Thanks for hosting.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Jill ~ Your link didn't work.

Anastasia ~ That's how many I am taking on too. :)

Jeska ~ You rock! Wish I was brave enough...lol!

Veens ~ This is a good excuse then. :)

Suey ~ I agree. My family and I go at least once a week.

jenclair ~ Louisiana libraries area awesome, aren't they?

zquilts ~ You need to link to the post where you will be listing your or at the very least what SuziQoregon is doing. You know, show some sign of joining on your blog. ;) And please include a link back to where others can sign up.

Kerry ~ I went hog wild this year with buying books. I need this challenge too.

Jessalina ~ Wonderful!

SuziQoregon ~ Just include a link back where others can find the challenge as well.

Whitney ~ You are very welcome.

The Holistic Knitter ~ Glad you like it! :)

SuziQoregon said...

Perfect - I always link back to the Challenge info post in my sidebar widgets. Thanks. I'll get my official 'joining the challenge post' up sometime before the end of the year. I need to wrap up a few 2008 challenges before posting about 2009's.

MsValerie said...

I'm definitely in for this one! No blog, but I'll keep track on the 100+ Books site with that challenge.

I'm passionate about libraries...they've been my happy places since I was in first grade.

I'm going to commit to 50 books...it will help me with my resolution to borrow (rather than buy) every book I can find at the library.

Rachelle said...

Thanks, I will choose the 25 books option.

margot said...

I'm in for this one. I too am passionate about libraries. They have enriched my life. I will be back to join within the next few weeks. Thanks for setting up a great and worthwhile challenge.

Yay! I love my library, but I've been in school for the last couple years and haven't had as much time to devote to reading for entertainment as I would like. This is a perfect challenge for me and I am very excited!!!

Jenny said...

This sounds fun. I choose the 50 book read. I work there and books always follow me home. This is mostly where I read books from anyway. Thanks

trav said...

I'm in for the 25 in 2009! This sounds like a lot of fun. Thanks for hosting it and getting us going.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

MsValerie ~ No blog needed. Steve, my hubby, is in on this one too and he doesn't have one. ;) And he said he's not gonna either...lol!

Rachelle ~ You are welcome. I thought the different amount would help.

margot ~ Me too!

Kimmie Baby ~ I don't know what I'd have done without ours. Scary thought!

Jenny ~ You go! I think I could do 50, but I am limiting myself in 2009 to the numbers listed. The reason is I'd like to sign up for more challenges this coming year.

trav ~ Yah! I have 25 down too.

Janet said...

I haven't committed to a number for this challenge but I am in for it. I probably can do 50! But we'll see.

Nice idea. I always borrow books so I'm aiming for 25 next year but it could be 50!

Elizabeth Swift said...

I am in for 12.

I'm on board for 25. I'm so excited to see so many fellow library fans. All the books I read are from the library, except rare cases when I borrow from others or receive gifts.

Cath said...

The perfect challenge for me - count me in for 25 please.

Beth F said...

I'm changing my goal for this challenge to 25. I was looking over my wish list and the library's online catalog, OverDrive, and NetLibrary, and I feel confident I can to 25.

GeraniumCat said...

I'm trying not to buy books, so this will be very good for my finances, but maybe not so good for my soul - I can see far too much crime fiction being read in 2009!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Folks, I am working the list slowly here. I'll make my way to each one. Promise.

Beth F ~ Yes, that's how I feel. I use the audio downloads, plus the CDs, so I should be able to do 25.

GeraniumCat ~ Me too! I am really going to tighten things up in 2009.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Sherrie ~ I have your direct link added. Also, you have the MOST BEAUTIFUL blog!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Janet ~ Don't feel pressured into it yet. I still think I might change my number on one of the other challenges...lol!

BooksPlease ~ Same here. I'm going for 25, but I might do more.

Elizabeth Swift ~ YES! The more the merrier!

nomadreader ~ I agree. I didn't know there would be such an awesome turnout.

Pabast ~ So glad you are joining me in this adventure! I love your blog and reviews. Keep them coming!

Crickel01 ~ I admire you. I don't have the patience to volunteer...lol!

Cath ~ I am so glad! Love having you join in the fun.

Jeanette said...

I think this is the perfect challenge for me because it really won't be much of a challenge at all! :-)

J. Kaye Oldner said...

LOL @ Jeanette! I think a few of us feel the same way!

meghan...or is it? ~ It is so much fun. :) I just started challenges earlier this year. Now look at me...lol!

Molly (Restless Reader) said...

Hi Everyone, I've signed up to read 25 books from my local library in 2009.

Icedream said...

Now this is a challenge I am not worried about meeting. I signed up for 25. I may not manage to read over 100 book next year and I may not read many of my own books but reading library books is my thing :D.

zquilts said...

My post about this challenge will appear on my blog tomorrow Sunday 11/23/08. I love this concept. I can't imagine that I cannot make 50 !

Kristie said...

Count me in! I am only pledging 25 books because I want to read more of my own next year, but it will probably be more. My list will probably change a bit and won't be ready for awhile though so I will be back!

Thanks for putting another great challenge on!

Leah/ Texas/ United States said...

What fun! I'm pledging to read 50 books, which should result in a decent amount of late fees that will support the library (no, I'm NOT one of those people that holds onto books forever, but I do occasionally forget to return a book for a week or so). Thanks for the challenge!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Molly (Restless Reader) ~ Hey! Glad to have you join!

Icedream ~ I thought about you when I was posting it too...lol!

zquilts ~ I think I will hit 50 too, but I am listing 25 just in case.

Scriptor Senex ~ At the very end of the year, I'll set up another Mr. Linky for you to link your reviews. That way, I can stop by and read all the books everyone is reading!

Kristie ~ Same here, but I'm 100% I can do 25. Maybe in 2010, I'll commit to more.

Leah/ Texas/ United States ~ Hey! So nice to meet you!

Jan in Edmonds said...

Let me just start out small and do 12 even though I'm sure to do more. Better for me! Thanks so much J. Kaye for hosting a fun challenge.

I'm committing to 25. Hopefully, I can do it!

Bella Foxx said...

I would like to enter this challenge. I am going for 25 books. My blog is Bella is reading.

Bella Foxx said...

P.S. Although I get most of my books from the library, I signed up for a read your own books challenge and am trying to read all the books I own and have never read.

That is why I am only going for 25 library books.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Jan in Edmonds ~ You can up the numbers later if needed.

Debbie ~ Sure you can!

Bella Foxx ~ I signed up for that one too!

Nan Greenwald said...

I read over 235 books this year so it will be interesting to see how I do next year.

Nan Greenwald said...

If we do not have a blog where can we list the books we read from the library?

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Nan, you can list them here in the comments section or on the Yahoo Groups.

Kristen howe said...

Of course all of my books I've read this year are ones I brought or borrowed from the library. It's a no-brainer for next year, except for ones I brought elsewhere.

JulieZS said...

This will be fun, I love my local library and always have a full bookbag going, filled with library books to read and/or return. Thanks for hosting and organizing the challenge.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

JulieZS ~ Oh, I do too. Ours is awesome.

I definitely will commit to 50 but I can't post the link until I write up a post about it. I'll get there.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Sandra ~ Take your time. There is no cut off date to sign up.

sally906 said...

drey said...

Hi J.Kaye - I broke down and am signing up for this too. =) Put me down for 25. I'm pretty sure I'll read more than that, but just in case I lose my library card or something... =D Thanks for hosting!

Kristi said...

I am committing to 50 - I should be able to reach this on my own - but I read about 4-5 books to my son a week, so may fall back on his if I am in a pinch!

Kristi

J. Kaye Oldner said...

sally906 ~ I don't even have titles down yet. So my act isn't exactly that together. I think I have my first book though...lol!

drey ~ Honestly, I think I can do 50, but I don't want to overextend since I have signed up for so blasted many challenges. I'll keep a count and will add any of the ones I went over.

Kristi ~ Definitely! Young Readers count!!

CCDPiper said...

I love this challenge idea. I get most of my books from the library now, so this should be an easy one. I'm planning on 25, but will most likely be closer to 50.

I screwed up and put the wrong link on Mr. Linky though. :-( Oops!

CCDPiper said...

Nevermind. :-) I figured out how to delete the incorrect one and now have the correct link in place. I'm good to go!

Melody ~ Definitely! Crossovers are encouraged. :)

Nan ~ So glad you are joining. I feel the same way.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

BookPsmith ~ I totally agree. I see signs of it now. They are cutting the staff's hours already.

BookPsmith said...

I love my library so I feel a little guilty over how easy this challenge will be. But seeing as our state will be having severe budget cuts, our libraries need all the support they can get.

I am committing to read 12 books in 2009. Thanks for hosting.

meg89, Jessica, Sandra, Cindi, and Keesh ~ I am thrilled to see you all joining this challenge. I don't know where I'd be without our library!

I like this reading challenge -- always love to support the local library...it's one of my favourite places to visit and hang out.

So count me in...I'm going for the goal of 25 library books in 2009.

Enjoy, everyone!

PS. How do I link to Mr. Linky?

yellojkt said...

Put me down for the 12 book challenge. That sounds like a great goal. I also run a challenge every January called National Just Read More Novels Month. This sounds like a great two-fer challenge.

FleurFisher said...

Great challenge - I'm in for 50!

debnance said...

I'll try for 50!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Karla, yellojkt, FleurFisher, debnance ~ Welcome to the challenge! It's going to be a fun year.

Brenda Leyland ~ Since you are posting your list in your left sidebar, you did fine. The button and the list below it is great!

I've committed to 50 books for this challenge! Haven't picked them ahead of time, though.

I love this challenge idea! thanks

Mary said...

Thanks for the inspiration :D I'm going for the whole 50!

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Folks: When you sign up under Mr. Linky, list the direct link to your post where your library books will be listed. This is important!

mannequin, Eva, Juliann in WA, Mary ~ Welcome to the challenge!

I'm new at these challenges, but I decided to start with this one. I'm going to try for 12 books this year!

Hello all! I think I'm going to go for 50 books!

Thank you for doing this!

Callista said...

Could you remove number 11? I changed where my list is. I just added the new link but need the old link deleted. Thanks.

I'm going for 50 books!

Wow, my first ever reading challenge! I'm excited about this one, although I have a stack of books that I have been sent for review to read before I get back to the library.

Thanks for hosting this one :-)

Hi, I'm going to visit every library in my city (all 53 of them) as part of my Mission 101 so I'd definitely consider myself as supporting and celebrating them!

irreverentmama said...

I visit my local library about 45 times a year (no, I'm not exaggerating) so I'm sure I can manage 50 books. Fun!

I'm going for the 25-book one.

Again, thanks for all your work organizing these challenges!

Callista ~ 11 is removed! Thanks for letting me know.

J.Kaye, hello and thanks for hosting this. After trying to fight it off for a few weeks, I finally caved in and signed up...for the gluttonous 50! Looking forward to everybody's reviews.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Richard ~ Welcome! I was just at your blog. Wonderful site! :)

Jane said...

Decided that I might as well do this one, too. :) I'll go for 25.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Jane ~ After I posted on your blog, I realized this wasn't your first challenge to sign up for. Sorry for the repeated message, but I did want to welcome you. Glad to have you join in the fun!

Lulu said...

I am signed up for 25. This is only my 2nd "official" challenge that I have signed up for. I am excited.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Lulu ~ Welcome!

Lori said...

I'm signed up for 50 books from the library. I'm in grad school so there's not much room in the budget for buying books. The library is my friend.

Lori said...

I signed up & managed to link to the wrong blog post. It should have been.

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Lori ~ I have it corrected! Thanks and welcome to the challenge!!

Julie said...

I'd love to join! I'm going with 12 because library trips are hard for me!

Tami said...

OK, I'm excited.....I guess I will put my squee in here now! :) I will make a trip to my library (which they are already tired of seeing me!) and get some things renewed and check out a book!

Seeing as I work at a public library, this should be easy! I get all of my books from the library - I'm sure I'll still buy a few, though! I'm committing to 50.

M said...

Yay! This is a great challenge!

Mary said...

So, I goofed and put the link to my homepage instead of the page where the books are listed. (and, yes, looking back I do realize that the instructions were really clear and in bold!) Should I just sign up again with the correct link? Sigh. Thanks!

Mary Ann said...

I am going for the 50 book challenge. This year we rediscovered our local library and visit weekly. I keep track of my reads on goodreads.com and have created a shelf for this list.

J. Kaye said...

Mary ~ I added the correct link! Welcome to the challenge! :)

Mary Ann ~ Is this the same Mary I am responding to above? I am not a member of Good Reads and won't be able to view your list. If you don't have a blog, I suggest you join the Yahoo Groups and post your progress there.

Mary said...

Thanks so much for fixing the link. Mary (me) and Mary Ann are different people.

Kathleen said...

While I am trying to read more of the books on my own shelves this year, I think that this is a great idea for a challenge. My queue at the library is nearly always maxed out and this gives me much encouragement to keep it that way. The more books we each request helps our own library branch too. A win-win partnership. Kathleen D

J. Kaye said...

Mary ~ Awesome! I thought Mary Ann was a different person, but didn't want to assume. ;)

Kathleen ~ I know what you mean about being maxed out. I've had to use the kids' cards just for that reason...lol!

Monique said...

You would think with all the books that I go through, I would be able to read simple directions. Could you remove my link from Mr. Linky, I didn't direct it to the challenge post on my site

Koula said...

Hello everyone I will do the 25 challenge. I am a freguent visitor to my public library.

orannia said...

HI!

I would like to sign up please? I borrow the majority of my books from the library, so I will be brave and aim for 50 books :) The direct link to my post is:

This is my third challenge to sign up for this year, and this may be the easiest one of all! I love my local libraries (I'm blessed to have 2 different ones to choose from ).

I had unofficially signed up before December before I joined the blogging universe. Now I am officially signing up now that I have a blog.

J. Kaye said...

Monique ~ Looks like the link is good now. :) I think the excitement of joining the challenge blinds us from being able to read instructions...lol!

Koula ~ Great! Glad you are joining in.

orannia ~ Have you added! I'll be over to your blog with an official welcome shorty.

Christy Janes ~ I agree. I love our library!

Caspette ~ Great! I'll be over to visit soon. :)
