This is a great way to combine 1st in a Series with this one. The only thing with 2nds is doesn't have to be a series book. It can be a book from an author you've just read one book from before.
Here are the guidelines:
1. Anyone can join. You don't need to have a blog to participate.
2. Read 12 books by authors that you have only read once. It doesn't have to be a series.
3. You can join anytime between now and December 31, 2009. Don't start reading until January.
4. You may list your chosen books any time during the year. Change the list if needed.
5. When you sign up under Mr. Linky, put the direct link to your post where your books will be listed. If you list just your blog’s URL, it will be removed.
Optional: Post/Link your reviews here.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask below or email me at jkayeoldner@yahoo.com. Comments usually get a quicker response.

Okay fine, you made me do it... i'm joining this one too... I have no self-control. :)
Hi!
As if I need another reading challenge, but couldn't pass this up. I have read so many new authors this year, I want to read more of their books. I'm addicted to challenges!! Take Care!!
Sherrie
Nely ~ LOL, me either. :)
splummer ~ I got hooked early in 2008 and haven't looked back since.
There u go - add me in! This is my last challenge :D and the last time i m saying this :D
J Kaye - please don't tempt me with anymore!

Veens! I can't promise that!!
oh my gosh, another challenge! lol. I must join.

I need to go through a 12 step program to get off this addiction - LOL. Yes, I'm joining this one too.
I have a technicality question: If you've only read one book and one short story by an author, can the second book you read be counted as a "2nd"? Or is that technically a "3rd"? I don't want to cheat if I sign up. :-)
Lezlie
Lezlie ~ I'd have to say that would be a 3rd.
Darn. OK. I can live with that. :-)
Lezlie
Okay, I really need some self-control!
LOL @ Debbie. I am no help. 2009 will be my year of book challenges. I'm going all out!
naida ~ Joy came up with this idea and it's awesome!
Kara ~ I need one too, but don't wish to seek help...lol!
Hi Judith. I'll be doing all of them except for the YA I believe. Where you do link them, since I don't have a blog yet. Can I send them to the group per challenge?
This is going to be tricky. But sure, I'm in.
Kristen ~ Posting your reviews on the Yahoo Groups will be perfect! I haven't been good about doing so, but promise to do better in 2009. :)
I have another question. It's kind of an extension of my previous question. Aren't I a pain? :-) Can I count a short story for this challenge if it is the second thing I've read by that author? (I'm looking for ways to expand my short story reading.)
Lezlie
This one sounds like fun too. I am going to be busy next year jsut reading. Where did you say the 12 stop group signs up? Lindy
Lezlie ~ You are so not a pain. Here's the deal. This is a book challenge. So you have to complete a book, meaning if you read a book of short stories and the author happens to be in that book you've completed, that counts. The key being, the entire book has to be read, not a segment. Does that make sense?
Grilsgood ~ "the 12 stop group signs up?" I have no clue what a 12 group sign up is. If you could explain more, maybe I can assist.
Yup. Got it now! Thanks, J. Kaye!
Lezlie
Apparently I'm obsessed with book challenges.
miish ~ But that's a good thing, right?
I'm in.

Kelly
Kelly! Welcome. I can't comment over at Vox unless I am a member. So I will wish you luck here.
These challenges are so addictive! I've added this one, too.
This should be interesting. Thanks. I'll post my blog later.
Amanda ~ I know...and I am not too sure that's a bad thing...lol!
Jenny ~ Great!
Just started keep track of my books this last August - so hope that I can find 12 books that are "seconds" - I signed up for the new author challenge again this year, so maybe I will just have to read 2 by a few of those!
Kristi
Well, I'm trying to cut back on challenges for next year, but I really have to join this one - just can't help myself! I just put up a post about it on my blog here.
kristi ~ I have a long list for this challenge. It's just a matter of getting it together...lol
jlshall ~ I think when you came by, Mr. Linky was out of commission. It's back and I added your information. If I didn't do something correctly, let me know. I can change it. :)
Thank you for hosting a great challenge! I couldn't resist!
Another technical question - If you read a book by a new to you author in 2009, and then read a second book by them, does this count? I'm just trying to decide whether I need to cram a couple of new authors in before the end of 2008!
farmlanebooks - The first one counts, the second one doesn't. However, if you join the 2nds Challenge, that second book will count there.
Yet another reading challenge.... I will most likely get this one done though!;)
Too good not to sign up for
I'm in too please. Thanks for coming up with another good one J. Kaye! =D
I am in, sure hope there are 12 series left that I havent' read the first book in...lol
Lindy
I know that I have at least 30 challenges on my blog, but I like a challenge that I can handle.
Judy/intergalactic bookworm
chan ~ I agree. I think this will be one I can do. I completed it last year. :)
SueFitz ~ Yep, Joy thought up some good ones.
Lissa ~ Wasn't me. It was Joy.
Grilsgood ~ You've already signed up. Look at #19.
Intergalactic Bookworm ~ Welcome! When you list the link, make sure it's to your blog page where you'll be listing your books. If you wish to post books on your sidebar instead, then list the challenge gif with a link. That way, the word will get around about the challenge.
Another great challenge. I'm in.
Mervi ~ Glad to have you join in!
Oh I definitely want to join this challenge too. I read so many new writers I'd like to follow up by reading more from each of them.
I'm going to officially join soon, right now I'm going through my shelf and I have a question. Lets say I have read one book by an author, but the come across a story by them in an anthology, would the anthology story count as my second, or do I wait till I read a full 2nd book by author to count as 2nd?
wendy ~ I agree. There are so many this year!
Kisha ~ As long as you read the whole book. These need to be books that are listed.
Okay, I have a question - imagine I read an author for the first time in 2009 and read a second book by that author in 2009 as well - would this second book then count in as well?
Kathrin ~ Yes, and I already planned to do that. I have Jordan Dane's first two books in a series. One will be for the 1st Challenge and book two will be for the 2nds Challenge.
Darn, I was hoping anthology stories wouldn't count gonna have to adjust my list...lol
Kisha ~ If it's a whole book, then there is no reason why not. Sorry. :)
Was hoping this challenge was happening in 2009. Was just going through some first time authors, looking for another book so will have some idea of what's on tap. Thanks J. Kaye for hosting this. So looking forward to it!
Great, J. Kaye! Then I'm definitely in :-) I will create a partial list (no clue whether I can come up with all the books right today) and then add it to Mr. Linky...
Jotter Jan ~ I know what you mean. I was geared up for it and then I found out that Joy wasn't hosting challenges in 2009. I about fainted. I am so going to miss her ideas this coming year. She had the best!
Kathrin ~ If it makes you feel any better, I only have a few listed. And from those few, the list could change.
J. Kaye - it does make me feel a little better :-)
I actually did pretty good with my tentative list, though!
GREAT IDEA and I am game is there a particular day to post or do we just do it?
I know it looks like I've joined twice but I just read the instructions "doh" the second one has my post sorry!
Sarai ~ You can list it as you go or now if you have the titles. But you can always change them as needed. ALL the challenges I host are like that. Mainly it's because I am forever changing things...lol!
I'm a little late to the party but I'm definitely up for a challenge.
Mary Beth ~ You aren't late. You are right on time!
I'm back again all signed up, I have challenge issues =o)
I finally made it!
let the fun begin:)

thanks for hosting this:)
laura
Kisha, Literary Feline, retroredux ~ So glad you three made it! :)
Ok, just one more challenge...really! :)
I just can't seem to stop myself. I love a reading challenge.
debbiesworld & Rasberryswrlgirl ~ I really know how you feel. After getting tired of only one more, I started saying no more. I think that was five challenges ago. :(
This is a great challenge. I already have some authors from last year that I am going to read seconds from.
http://abookloverforever.blogspot.com/2009/01/2nds-challenge-2009.html
Yep, I'm in for this one, too.
Stina ~ I would have posted a comment on your blog with a welcome, but I'm not allowed to without being a member. I'll post it here. Welcome to the challenge! :)
I just signed up!
So excited to join in.
I never knew there were so many different challenges. I love it.
I originally thought this was 2nd in series but see that it is 2nd by author. I will probably make most as 2nd in series but I already have at least two that are 2nd by author. I have been reading alot of new authors and this will help remind me to read some of my favorites too!
MarthaE ~ This is one of my favorite challenges!
LOL I'm entering this super late, but after looking over my list of books read this year so far, I only have 3 more books to read to meet this challenge. :)
Katy, Not that late. ;) And you can count your books for all of 2009.
