Goodbye Google Reader

Hate to be such a wet blanket, but I can't deal with Google Reader. Yes, I did see where I can separate the different blogs, but it still clumps Blogger Followers into one pile...and count them twice, I believe. So instead having of 1000+ blog posts to read, I really have 500+. I'm just looking for more.

I think FeedDemon might be it. I like how the page expands out and I have the option of reading titles, blurbs or full posts. I can also comment all in the same box.

For the next couple of days, I will be switching over feeds. I should be able to transfer them over, but Google won't let me download them. Instead of figuring out what the problem is, I'll just do it the slow way. I don't want to waste another day on this stuff. :(

Don't get me wrong. Love Google. Love Blogger. I just like another reader better.

You can download and import your google feeds to feeddemon. Go to your google reader, click settings in the upper right corner. There you will find an import/export tab.Than click Export your subscriptions as an OPML file. Than in feeddeemon go under file and you'll find the import/export option.

What Sharonanne said about moving your feeds.

GReader counts the blogs you follow twice only IF you are subscribed to their feeds the old-fashioned way too. It's annoying, but since I figured that out I will "follow" new Blogger blogs and "subscribe" to blogs on other platforms. Eventually I'll "unsubscribe" from blogs I "follow," and that should clean up the duplicates.

Good luck with FeedDemon - and you can always read posts through Twitter, too :-)!

Too bad google reader didn't work for you. I am such a google follower that I can't even dream of using a non-google option. Let us know how feeddemon works out and i might have to make that very tough transition myself!

oops.. me again.. just realized that google reader has an option under settings saying "Show followed blogs from blogger". I unchecked that and now I see only one instance.. hope this helps!

Please repost after you've used Demon for a while. I'm curious but not ready to switch yet.

sharonanne _ I Twittered you about "There you will find an import/export tab.Than click Export your subscriptions as an OPML file." I guess you didn't get it? Or I missed your response. That's the only bad thing about letting too many messages go by in Twitter. :(

Anyway, I already tried and couldn't.

Florinda ~ I see that and it's a royal pain. I need to divide the blogs up into groups. Some I want to read more than others and have to wade through all of them.

Ramya ~ I'll be honest, I am blown away by the features. Makes GR look like a fossil.

Ramya ~ It does, but will pop in and out me realizing it. The side bar isn't very big.

Beth F ~ I will do that!

I like my google reader. It was confusing at first but what you have to do is unsubscribe to the feed you want to follow and then subscribe again and it only puts it under followers. I hope the other one will work better for you.

Dar ~ I understand, but it's more than that. Now that I've tried a new one, it's limited in the options.

I'd love to know how this is working for you, J.Kaye. My gripe about Google Reader is that it takes so long to load and open a new page to comment!

It sounds like you can comment right on the display/read page with Feed Burner, is that right?

So this is a little different from GR in that it has to be downloaded right? I'm very interested, because although I like GR better than BlogLines, I have a lot of issues with GR. The comment feature being a major one!

Hmm . . . I don't see my comment I left a couple of days ago. I came back to see what others were saying. I'm glad you found a reader that you like, I wish you much luck!

I thought I would mention for your other readers, that as far as some of your issues, I've solved them w/in Google Reader. I don't see Blogs I'm Following twice. It's hidden. Using Firefox and a Greasemonkey extension, I don't leave Google Reader to leave a comment. In fact, I'm in it right now. And it's full screen. I'm not sure which ads you're talking about it. Like Ramya I'm a Google girl through and through. I don't know if I could make the switch.

Natasha ~ This post is old news. I've posted more than one time on this topic. I don't remember you commenting here, but you comment on the more recent post:

http://j-kaye-book-blog.blogspot.com/2008/12/my-adventure-learning-about-feeddemon.html

Veens ~ You might find you don't need anything like this one. A few months back, GR was fine for me. My needs have changed and it's was time to look for something better.

Dawn, you can. It's awesome.

Shana, I've posted more about my experiences at the URL above.

And folks, I do want to add, I am not trying to convert bloggers. I am just posting this for people who might feel as I do. If GR is working for you, then this post isn't for you.

As far as the ads, I answered that one in my last post about this.

Actually i got Google reader to stop showing me the blogger following posts. It was somewhere in the preferences. And it didn't happen right away like I expected but in a day or so. Very odd, I know. I didn't like it either.
