J. Kaye’s Thoughts

I love when a story entraps me to the point I can no longer stop reading. There is no longer a choice. It’s like rolling down a hill at such a high speed that you can’t stop. You’re enjoying the thrill, but praying the ending will be a good one. That’s the way it was for me when I read this psychological thriller.

The story begins with a group of college students taking Logic & Reasoning 204 taught by Professor Williams. Their assignment for the course is to locate a fictionalized girl named Polly. Their failure to do so will result in her death. It turns out, this fictionalized Polly is very much like a cold case file of Deanna Ward who went missing twenty years ago.

Over the course of the next couple of weeks, Professor Williams feeds his students pieces of evidence while at the same time evidence of Deanna Ward surfaces to the point three students believe there is a connection. For three students, what’s real and what isn’t becomes blurry.

Even though some of the ending as a bit unbelievable, such as the lawsuits that would result from such an act, this was an edge-of-your-seat kind of thriller for me. I just loved it! I can’t wait to see what kind of tale Lavender weaves next.

My rating is .

Just a comment - I'm so glad you loved this book. I, on the other hand, was extremely disappointed. I LOVED the premise, but there was just too many confusing bits of information. I never knew whether something was fact or fiction. Sorry that I rained on your parade (but I'm usually in the minority anyway, so don't mind me). :)

J. Kaye Oldner said...

Joy, you didn't rain on my parade and in fact, you are with the majority. Check Amazon reviews. Most thought it was confusing.

I thought this was one of the best tightly woven stories I have ever read in a VERY long time. I l-o-v-e-d it. Gosh, this author rocks!

I read Obedience as an ARC from the library, and didn't like it. I thought the plot was just too improbable, and was irritated by what seemed to be anachronisms, like college students listening to "records" in a novel that was supposed to be set in the present day, as far as I could tell. Maybe I'm just too close to the setting to have enough perspective!

I went to High School with Will. He is an amazing talent,a great father and husband. His students at UofL love him too! He came from a very humble beginning and I am extremely proud of him and consider it an honor to call him a friend. His dad said he is close to finishing his next manuscript so all of you who are fans, the wait won't be much longer. I enjoyed this book and the whole time I was reading it, I had a hard time imaging the skinny kid I went to school with was the author. He is only 32 and is still young in the publishing world. I only expect him to become better with each book!
