My husband bought me a Nook for Mother’s Day. (Doesn’t the word “Nook” sound…X-rated? I find that I always let my voice drop when I say it). When e-Readers began to pop up in the purses of my friends, I quickly skittered over to the “Oh, I like the sensory experience of real books. The smell! The purr of fanned pages under a thumb!” camp, with all the other people
The Pros? I love how many books I can store on my Nook. My house is overrun with books, but I have always been—and will always be—a person who buys books. It’s my thing. I love how easy and turbo fast it is to purchase the books I want. It’s actually…dangerously convenient. Almost like you didn’t even spend any money. Like forking off bites of birthday cake when you’re whizzing through the kitchen. Doesn’t even really count. I love how lightweight the Nook is. While this sounds old-womany, big books kind of hurt my hands. I like how organized and accessible and portable my reading material is. The Cons? I’m terrified to read in the bathtub or the pool. This majorly cramps my style. The shame of returning a conspicuously wavy library book is one thing; the idea of dropping a $300 gadget into the tub is another kettle of fish altogether. I don’t find it as easy to flip back to previous sections of a book to remind myself of a character’s name or to reread earlier passages in light of later ones, since I am not likely to “bookmark” these passages at first pass. Also, my reading light doesn’t clip on my Nook. I’m sure Barnes and Noble makes one just for the Nook, but after dropping 300 bucks on the e-reader, itself, I’m fresh out of discretionary funds.
What about you? Do you have an e-reader? I’m sure many of you have hashed out the pros and cons of Kindles, Nooks, iPads, etc. on your blogs. If you’ve posted about this topic, leave a link to the specific post below so I can snoop around in your thoughts.

PS: I got a nook for mothers day and I LOVE IT!
Hmm. Intrigued. But I don't have a Kindle yet, either. :-/
Too rich for my blood. I'd be afraid of dropping the thing. It isn't a big deal to drop a library book but this thing is a whole other story. Now I'd be willing to try one out but someone would have to pay for it since I don't have a few hundred bucks just lying around.
I have owned a Kindle for about a year now and I love it. Dead Tree Books are mostly in the past for me now. It freed space for scrapbooking gear, and a few less dust bunnies. And I carry books up mountains (literally) now. 7 ounces. Its great!
I have a Kindle, that I've had for almost 1 year and I just got an iPad on May 1st which has the Kindle for iPad App. I love both of them. I left a link of mr.linky for my review of my Kindle :) Glad you love your Nook! I've not gotten a chance to use one yet myself.

As an ex librarian I have always been very anti e-books! Then I was offered the chance to review an e-book, nearly turned it down as I do not like reading books on the computer!
Then my lovely husband gave me a Sony e-reader for my Birthday.
Yet to blog about it but will be very soon.
Everyone I know loves theirs. I really wanted one - but then I tried my friend's Kindle (a few years ago I should say, so perhaps technology has changed). I had an issue in that I like my print a bit larger(what can I say? I hit 40 and the eyes are growing older!) and I read very quickly. This was a bad combination. I was constantly hitting the forward button - much more troublesome (click, click, click) than turning a page. My other issues: I love love love sharing books with friends and I also get 90% of my books from the library (which doesn't have them all in ebooks yet). So -- I guess it's not for me right now. I may give it a try again as I don't know one person who doesn't love theirs. -beth
WOW this must have been the year for eReaders and Mother's Day. My family gave me a Sony eReader and I LOVE it! The idea was to curb my habit of purchasing books - ha!!! In any case, I've already caught myself a couple of times now actively trying to turn the page - but for obvious reasons that didn't work. I'll admit that I too am afraid of taking it to the bathtub - but that's a great reason to always keep a physical book nearby.
I also wanted to add that another friend of mine also received the same eReader as myself for Mother's Day as well - what a great day this year!
Hope everyone else is enjoying their eReader as much as I am :)
I know what you mean about the name NOOK. When it asked for devise name, I, of course, named mine "Nookie". What other name can it have???
Put your Nook in a large zip-lock bag and read in the tub. I do it all the time. If one isn't enough for you, put it in two!!!
By the way, I have a Kindle 2 also!!!
Nook in a ziplock bag! Brilliant!
I will always read "dead tree" books. I love reading in the tub. I love the feel and the smell. I, too, go back to refresh myself on details. etc.
I will never get a Kindle or a Nook but I WILL get an iPad but not for reading books.
That means I'll be picking everyone's trash for those discarded books. Maybe that means the prices of new books will go down? :)
I left a link to a post I wrote about why I probably won't be reading an eBook anytime soon!!! Although I'm not opposed to winning one, LOL, I just don't have an extra $300 in the budget right now, and truthfully, I'm painfully attached to my hard copies!!!
Tried out a friend's nook and really liked it, but decided I would stick to physical books. They're cheaper, I can pass them on to friends or the library when I finished reading them, and there are no compatibility issues down the road. I also had the same problem you did with wanting to flip back a few pages to check something.
Great idea about the plastic baggie for reading in the tub!
I'd prefer a physical book in my hands but I was traveling a lot on business and just couldn't lug a big bad around with all of my books in it. I broke down and bought the Kindle and I love it. It serves a wonderful purpose for me and with the non-glare screen I was able to read everything I wanted even outside on the beach in Maui!
I got a kindle for some holiday last year. I really do like it. I had the same problem with not realizing how quickly 10 dollar books added up. It is easier to read on the kindle, so I was finishing quicker and... well... getting more books. I have so many book books to be read right now, that I only get a kindle book if I have to have it NOW. But I wish I could read every book on it. I love it.
I will say that a few months after I got it the crystal behind the screen broke. It had streaks across it and was unreadable. I called amazon and they replaced it for FREE. I didn't even pay shipping. I thought that was amazing customer service. Especially since I bet one of my kids stepped on it. I was so happy to have it back.
If I were ever lucky enough to win an ereader off of one of the many blogs I read, I'd use it for all the *free* ebooks I can snag, but I don't have the dough to sink into it, or even into brand-new regular books. All my literature comes either from bargain stores, ARCs, or the library.
I have a Sony e-reader and love it. I wrote a post a while back about it, and giving ebooks a chance.

Also, a little tip I've read from others - put your Nook in a ziplock bag for reading in the tub! Not sure about the size of a Nook, but apparently the Kobo e-reader fits perfectly.
so i have the misfortune to be a lowly wage-slave (part-time) at the company which sells the nook (incidentally, when our manager accidentally dialed 1-800-thenook instead of theBook, she got a very dirty call line). Having been forced to shill for this product and learn how to use it, i have NO desire at all to own one. I love STUFF - things - including books, and I find the nook really counterintuitive. the point about reading quickly is a good one - i read very fast and the nook can't keep up with me.
it's got some neato features and all, but....for now, i love my books.
(for what it's worth: eBooks are considerably less costly than *new* hard copies; also, for the time being, B&N is doing a free eBook a week; go in to the store, get the coupon code, and download the free ebook from B&N.com. You don't even need a nook - you can read it on your computer or any device compatible with B&N eReader software. free books are good)
LOVE the baggie in the bathtub idea, though! going to appropriate that for my horrible sales pitch.
I don't have an e-reader. I think if I had the opportunity I would rather buy a laptop that I can read in bed or on the couch than an expensive e-reader that I can't use to surf the internet. Or can you? Surf the net?
If I'm going somewhere, I'm just as happy to have a book. Paperbacks fit in my purse.
I did see an inexpensive e-reader called the JetBook, ($149.99) that comes in a variet of colors (red, black, white and grey) http://www.ectaco.com/main.jsp?do=products-view_item&item=20844&refid=29532.
Borders has the Kobo, that someone else has blogged about, (forget who, now)
I still don't think I would buy one at this time in my life though. I really do like looking at covers, holding books, etc. Pushing a lot of little buttons, (even on my phone) bugs me (as in it's hard to do all the time). Carpal Tunnel gets the best of me sometimes, and I tend to drop things like phones, remotes, books, etc. At least if I drop a book, I'm not going to ruin it.
The more I use my Nook the more I love it! I was in B&N download free content yesterday, and I added tons to my e-wishlist, and have had a good time today reading the free essays I downloaded.
I'm not a bathtub reader by nature, so no loss there for me personally.
Enjoy!

I am a book girl. I admit to an interest in an e reader for traveling (books can be heavy) - but I do still like my books all over the place. :)
I have the same isues with the budget but hope to get a Nook by Christmas. I will have to get free books from the libray and B&N (every friday)for awhile though.
Nope, no e-reader here. Despite having a computer before most of my friends and being a bit "techy", nothing beats a good old fashioned paper book!
Too funny! I have not attempted to get on of these because I carry and abuse my books. Haven't done the wavy thing with the library but I've come awfully close.
I'm sorry, I love the smell and feel of the real thing! There's nothing like the feel of a Borders! :)
I will be getting a nook next month, so I really really hope it is worth the money.
Here's my May list, and you'll find most of them read on Kindle.
My Kindle was a gift -- best gift EVER! However... if I was spending my own money, I do believe I might have popped for the Nook instead, the tipping point being the ability to share books, which the Kindle doesn't do.
Have both the Nook & a Sony eReader. I like the Nook better, mostly except that you can skip to a certain page number on the Nook. I'm lucky because our library has tons of eBooks available and I'm always scouring the eBook stores for the free & bargain priced books. I've found a bunch of great new authors that way!
There've been a few comments on here about using a Ziploc bag for waterproofing. If you wanna get something specifically for waterproofing, Amazon has a Waterproof Case of the Nook.

Just FYI.
Great blog. Think I'll do some snooping of my own.

I tried a Kindle last year but just really could not warm to it and so I returned it. I thought perhaps the DX version, was was not financially possible might have been a better option but I could in no way rationalize the money for a DX. I just received an IPad for my birthday though and I LOVE IT! Some people say that it is an IPhone on steroids, and that may be partially true (I don't have an IPhone). I LOVE reading books on the IPad and using the wireless when I am near a hotspot. I would never read a book, watch a movie or surf the web on a phone - but the IPad rocks! The book reader really works well and, IMHO, reads much more comfortably than the Kindle. Newspapers and magazine have some color - such an improvement. I now love having the ability to read books and do lots of other things too. I too will never stop buying real books - nothing compares, but I happy to be able to save some space and add this to my book arsenal - which also includes Audio books which also make my days much better! I will be posting an article on my new "baby" soon!
I have a Kindle, and did a massively lengthy review of it... if all goes well, you'll see another link at the bottom of that post where I did an update on the Kindle about a month after my original post.
Cheers!

I love my Nook. I will always buy books in hard copy form.
Love that the screen looks just like a page from a book and that I can change the print to x-large. Especially helpful after 5 eye surgeries. I also love sharing books from the Nook with other friends. It has a lend feature. Not all book are lendable yet. The good thing is I try books I might not try.
I'll be doing a follow up post pretty soon especially since we had to get Nooks instead of Kindles!
I have a gen 2 Kindle and love it! I lived in Kuwait for 4 years and didn't have access to any of the books I wanted. The Kindle let me order books and download them to my computer and onto the Kindle. There is also that immediate satisfaction you get with an automatic download. But that one-click purchasing can be dangerous. :)
It is hard too move back and forth through a Kindle book, so some books I need in a paper version so I can flip around. I wish the Kindle had Nook's color cover view.
The Nook looks cool, but you have to have wifi access for it to work, so that's no good for me if I'm traveling.
